  1. Anyone have knowledge, experience or ideas how to make a salve from bear fat? When I told person shipping it to me (bear fat oil) they said would render this weekend but put in sterile jar and seal instead of plastic. Said that's what the natives ask him for when making salve. I'm thinking to add herbs etc. Years ago someone gave me small container bear fat blended with olive oil for use on burns. HELP I'm excited to try making own medicinal salve but don't know where to start,

  2. While strictly opposed to forced purchasing of health insurance or penalty for not paying, it's always prudent to educate oneself about any and all options. Right now fortunate & thankful to have health insurance thru employer (15% premium cost share).

At least 23 states have now established their co-ops for health insurance. Other states have various other type plans outside the traditional insurance company system. Can go to your states insurance site for more info.

Have no idea how the non standard religious exemption claims to affordable health care act will stand up if challenged; but I will add the following info about cost sharing ministries as another thing to add to options AND if sincerely aligns with religious beliefs.

Also before I forget :Blushing: , if you require medications and are unaware of the 340B pricing, need to check into those hospital/pharmacy agreements in your area. When have more time will come back and post HHS link.

"The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provides a second form of religious exemption, one for those who are members of “of a health-care sharing ministry,” which is defined as a non-profit, health-insurance alternative program, where members typically pay in regular dues and then contribute toward one another’s medical costs.

To qualify for the exemption, the Act requires a sharing ministry to meet the following conditions:

    • It must be a qualifying 501©(3) organization exempt from taxation under section 501(a)
    • It’s members must “share a common set of ethical or religious beliefs and share medical expenses among members in accordance with those beliefs and without regard to the state in which a member resides or is employed”
    • Its members must retain their memberships, even after developing medical conditions
    • The sharing ministry or its predecessor must have been in existence at all times since Dec. 31, 1999, and medical expenses of its members must have been shared continuously and without interruption
since at least Dec. 31, 1999
    • It must conduct annual audits made available to the public on request and performed by an independent certified public accounting firm.

The Amish – thus double qualifying for exemption from the mandate – have participated in such co-ops for years. But there are also several such ministries established in the U.S. for people of other faiths and denominations.

Christian Healthcare Ministries, for example, is a 501©(3) cost-sharing ministry that claims its more than 100,000 members have shared more than $500 million in medical bills over the last 20 years.

“Christian Healthcare Ministries is not a health-insurance company,” the group’s website explains. “Rather, we are a group of thousands of Christians across the United States and around the world who share each other’s burdens in the area of health-care costs. We also pray for and encourage one another.”

Among similar groups are Medi-Share and Samaritan Ministries.

  3. Everything goes into the washer and then the dryer right away if it is washable.

I will start putting books into zip locks then freezing them as I do buy used books frequently.

Heat is also reported as method. “By placing the books in a standard oven at the lowest temperature possible (130° F for 3 hours) and placing wet newspaper or a pan of water in the bottom of the oven to maintain humidity inside the oven chamber, all stages of this insect, and in fact any insect, will be killed.” One article said even leaving books in hot car window for a few days was enough to take care of any problems.

  4. Not totally crazy idea, but one that requires a lot of careful thought and prayer. Only you truly know both him and full situation from years and years along that road of life. 20/20 hindsight what went wrong, what problems still exist, what's changed (or not). Be honest with yourself. Offhand from your brief summary description it's possible some of the "old" issues no longer relevant (his family?). Does he feel the same way as you and fully committted to doing whatever it takes to make it work this time?.

Go slow, be sure it's him you're wanting and not just willing to settle for anyone. Often when don't know what to do, it helps to ask self what will happen if do "nothing". Kinda helps sort things out on how important or urgent the issue is.

Hugs and prayers for your happiness GH no matter which way you decide. :hug3:

  5. Another felted mitten tutorial http://ocd-obsessivecraftingdisorder.blogspot.com/2011/03/tutorial-felted-mittens-from-recycled.html

Been making scrooge type sock hats from sweater sleeves. Any stretchy sweater will do. Doesn't have to be 100% wool because you don't want to shrink or felt. Simply cut off sleeve along seam edge (closest to neck opening). Can wear as it or tie off or stitch end and attach pom pom. Sweaters with ribbed sleeves can be cut along the lines for fringe. Not fancy but keeps the head warm and the long part covers back of neck to add more warmth for outside chores.

  8. :happy0203: I'll be happy to finally meet ya, Granny!!!!!

MtRider [...gonna be so much fun! :grouphug: ]

Sure excited about meeting ya and all the others. Praying nothing comes up to thwart my plans. Has wormie given out the password yet? I suspect he'll be out at the entrance gate doing guard duty with his BBQ fork again.

  9. :band2: Congratulations Lisa! :cheer: Don't be concerned about taking hubby. You have nearly a month to convince him we're not crazy. :happy0203:

Private note to Wormie :wormie2: (text hidden from all other eyes)

In addition to night maneuvers, you're now in charge of the shivaree!!! Sure hope groom goes willingly to give his bride customary wheelbarrow ride. If not, you know what to do. If I recall correctly Darlene's pond is located just west of the house. :whistling: Hoping to arrive Thurs and available to help with pot banging/noise making. P.S. Best keep this a secret for now, don't want to skeer newlyweds off.

  10. If a person is concerned about it, no harm in getting tested. Recommendation for entire generation is a little ridiculous in my opinion. As a baby boomer who missed woodstock and all the other high risk stuff won’t be running out any time soon and getting tested.

Always thankful for treatment options for those battling illness, however one can't help but note the "urgency of issue" coincides with availability of two new drugs that hit the market. Reportedly these added to current treatment regimens provide better cure rates, lower treatment time, at mere cost 1k to 4k per week.

As for false positive after blood donation due to vaccination must be meaning Hep B shot. There's no such thing as Hep C vaccine, though companies are working on so-called “therapeutic vaccines” designed to help patients already infected.

  11. this is what i have been up to this week...

    1. go to goodwill and get a ton of wool and alpaca sweaters

    2. take them home and shrink them

    3. sew up some niffy mittens with a polar fleece lining

    4. make a whole bunch and put them away for gift giving

these are sold in boutiques for $50 a pair--I can make around 20 pair for $10 :cloud9:

"Accidently" shrunk a wool sweater and tried to make wool gloves. Couldn't get them to turn out right and never thought of MITTENS instead. Do you have a pattern to share? Do you serge the seams, I don't have serger.
