  1. Great thread Stephanie! Made me think. We've been remiss in teaching ds much about operating big tractor and the plow. His brothers were baling hay on their own when not much older. So far all he's learned is about gun parts and repairs. Dh has been teaching how to operate lathes, mills, and that kind of stuff.

Homemaker, I'm going to have son help build portable chicken house this summer too. There are several free plans on line. And I'm thinking he can learn with me how to put down laminate flooring. He can figure the dimensions. measure and mark. Help tap in the boards and maybe run the saw after instruction and close supervision. Might take me awhile to get totally comfortable with that.

  2. :welcome4: Hi and a great big welcome Karelle. So glad you've joined us. As the others said, will be a great help in keeping "you know who" in line. Can you believe she needed written notice to let her MOM in the edge?? Well, I'm glad you set her straight right off. .

:woohoo: Darlene has done slipped up now. Let the cat outta the bag. Handed us the key to the castle. :sHa_sarcasticlol: Who wants to go first? Have we got a lot to tell you Karelle!! Check out her avator people... "nobody knows the trouble I been". Not anymore. :008Laughing::whistling:

  3. Looking for feedback from any AARP members. What kinds of discounts do you use the card for? What stores honor the card? Like does McDonalds or other business that promote "senior discount" programs use that for identification? I guess what I want to know is if the $12.50 membership is a good value or not. Some of this is addressed in above posts but they are couple years old and things may have changed.

    *asking for a "friend", cuz I'm only 29* :24:

  4. Hey Cat, I love the pink cat smiley! clap

A suggestion for the jokes, someone once said if you wouldn't tell it to your pastor/priest, or if that's not applicable, your mother, then possibly think twice before telling in general groups. Maybe this still won't fit everyone but that's my thoughts. Hugs to all.

  5. Colorful, exciting, humorous and so much fun,

Of this side of her our hearts have been won!

Often quietly hidden by the joy we get from her,

Kindness and sweetness, the part we now do refer.

In rising to the challenge, awesome task to be done,

    Everyone needs special friends...

    Miss Cookie surely is one!!!!

  6. It is a spice powder that comes in a small jar like other spices. We get ours at the dollar store or available at any grocery.

*Reading bottle: Seasoned Meat Tenderizer. Ingredients: salt dextrose, onion, spice anatto color, paprika, garlic, (calcium silicate added to make freeflow), and bromelan (tenderizer)*

  7. Please add "Robert" DH of co-worker. He's in Iraq and the heavy combat his squad is in right now is really weighing on her mind.

We talk some and while she holds a lot in I've overheard some phone calls and seen her try to hide some tears. She's a real strong gal so I know things must be rough.

It is so hard for the families to keep the homefront going, juggling everything that needs done here by theirselves and to also have the worry for loved ones.

  8. Good stuff Darlene. Crime & Insecurity/CAR is one personally need to think about in very near future. DH has been pushing this frugal squirrel to trade cars. Dislike idea of spending money for another vehicle, but it’s time I suppose. (This post reminded me – again - the last thing I’d want is to be stranded along some highway or even worse gravel road with car trouble.) Plus I really need a small SUV type for carrying things in the back. A truck would be good but need the people space too.

He mentions one of the things if could do over is 4x4 vehicle. Are all SUV 4x4’s? I’m curious on peoples thoughts about that as wouldn’t 4x4 get less mpg and be a lot more expensive to drive? Course if the SHTF would be driving a lot less than do now (extra travel for work training etc) Assuming could get or afford gas at all would probably be restricted to office. Since a public agency thinking it would still be operating if at all possible?? But the less mpg would not be a good thing right now. Am part of the “country” group so just the drive into “urban” category every day uses quite a bit fuel.

If it ever got to the point I had to drive up on the sidewalk to go around a riot or be concerned about using bumper for battering ram… thinking I would have to consider staying home and pray had prepared well enough ahead for loss of income … until then…

Anybody drive a SUV and have recommendation of what model to buy? PM me. TIA.

Who’s next? What ideas did this post bring out for you on prep weaknesses or needs?

  9. Cookie. Since I have 1,000 gallon stainless steel milk tank, it looks like about 1 oz at first, then 1/4 oz per week. Does that sound right?

The tank is covered so might not have chlorine burn off like swimming pools do ...wonder if that makes a difference?

(The site said this) DRY CHLORINE - also called calcium hypochlorite has the added benefit of extended shelf life. Providing it is kept dry, cool and in an airtight container, it may be stored up to 10 years with minimal degradation. If one is wanting to keep chlorine in larger quantities, this is the item to store as it is readily available at swimming pool supply stores and many hardware and grocery stores carrying pool items and requires less actual storing space than its liquid counterpart.

For chlorinating water in rain tanks, Western Australia Health Dept. regulations state for first time chlorination, add 7 grams dry (1/4 ounce by weight) or 40ml (1.35 ounces) liquid per 1000 liters (264 gallons) and let stand for 24 hours before drinking. To maintain adequate chlorination, on a weekly basis add 1 gram dry (.035 ounce by weight) or 4ml (.135 ounces) liquid per 1000 liters (264 gallons) of water. Let stand for two hours before drinking."

  10. I'm not urban but still not clear *nor is my pond water* on using the powdered swimming pool chlorine for treatment. Have read somewhere it has better shelf life than regular bottled liquid bleach.

Keeping eye out at WM for it to go on clearance sale now that season is almost over. There is "shock" stuff, "algae" stuff and other stuff. What is right kind to buy? Anybody know?
