  1. I have my grandmother's canner as well. Mine is a National Pressure company or something like that. It was bought out by Presto. Mine is dated 1941. I had to replace the part where the weight sits and couldn't get it out. I called Presto and for the cost of shipping the item to them (and the part which I had already ordered), they fixed it for me even though technically it wasn't one of their canners. They are great. If you are having a problem refurbishing yours, call them and ask if they will do this for you. Also, take it to the county extension office and they can test everything for free. They tested mine and told me the calibration was a little off and so I needed to adjust the lbs pressure. Instead of 10 lbs pressure I need to get it to 11lbs. That may be all you need. I love my canner and it is great to have that link to my grandmother.
  2. YOu can also just stick you vanilla beans into a container of sugar. Us it for baking. I adds vanilla to your recipe without having to have extract.
  3. I can get a 25lb bag at Sams for $13.80 ish. Aldi has 5lb bags for $2.39. Now that was 2 weeks ago so I am not sure if that price still holds. Will know better in 2 weeks when I go back to the store. I am in North Georgia.
  4. I think anything that affects or food and fuel supply drastically will cause the same types of uprisings. Everyone right now has the infamous "it will never happen to me" blinders on. Ask that question again in a few weeks and see what your respons is.
  5. This is a little off topic, but I have to give a kudos to Presto. My grandmother gave me her pressure canner (circa 1941 seriously). It is a national pressure canner or something like that. Anyway, it was missing the weight and I needed a new one. I did some research and found that Presto had bought the company a bazillion years ago. I ordered the parts, but couldn't remove the old gauge. Tried everything. I called Presto, and for the cost of just mailing it to them, they replaced everything and shipped it back to me. I had the county extension office check out my canner and it works great. I have used it for at least 5 years with no problem. I love the fact that I have something of my grandmothers. Back then they made things that last.
  6. Yesterday I found 73% lean ground beef on sale for..... wait for it....90 cents a lb! I also got boneless skinless chicken breast for .99 lb. Anyway, I had no freezer space left for my ground beef, so I canned it. I got 20 pints of ground beef. I am amazed at how easy it was to can. I have to smile every time I look at the jars. I am seriously considering canning other meats as well. Who knows, I could do without my freezer. What a thought!
  7. I can't even imagine what it must be like for you both. Dear Heavenly Father I lift up this couple to you. Thank you Lord for your work already in thier life. I thank you that you are and always will be the strength they need to both heal and persevere. I pray for wisdom and compassion in the Doctors and staff, but most of all Lord I do pray for a miracle in the lives of these people. I pray for healing right now in the name of Jesus. A healing so wonderful and amazing it becomes a witness to others of your power, love and grace. Send people to this wonderful lady to comfort her and support her body, mind and soul. Thank you in advance for all you do. In Jesus name....AMEN
  8. Aldis butter is I think $2.28 lb.
  9. MamaHill, I have a good fix for you if your frozen pumpkin is a little watery. I will usually put my pumpkin in a strainer over a 2 cup pyrex measuring cup. I then use the liquid for the evaporated milk in my recipe. I think it calls for 1 can of evaporated milk so I use 3/4 dry milk and enough pumpkin liquid and water to make 12 oz of evaporated milk.
  10. Yep! Good thru This coming Saturday. Happy November! lol
  11. Kroger is having a sale where if you buy 10 of an item you get $5 off your order. They have lots of canned stuff on sale. I thought I would list a few. These are even more awesome if you have a coupon. Kroger canned fruit is .49 after you buy 10, swanson chicken broth is .54 without a coupon or .29 with a coupon, chunkey soup is .99 without a coupon and .49 with, carnation canned evaporated milk is .59 without a coupon and .19 with, also included in sale are campbells cream soups, select harvest soup. If you have a kroger near by I would highly reccommend going especially if you have coupons! You can also mix and match.
  12. The other day I drove by a business which had a sign in the front that said "WE ARE NOT TAKING APPLICATIONS". I thought they must be bom barded with applicants and no longer had the time to be turning people away.
  13. YOu ain't kiddin. I just looked at the prices of butter and cheese at SAMs no less and they were at least $1 more a pound than a few weeks ago. Some were $2. Flour seems to be alright for now so will definately by a few bags this week just to be on the safe side. If I find a good price on butter or meat I will definately stock up.
