  2. My husband is building a chicken-plucking machine! http://www.countrysidemag.com/issues/90/90..._Kreuziger.html We will be butchering soon!
  3. I haven't bought paper towels in months. My MIL visited and complained about no paper towels and finally went to the store and bought some! I have simply been using a cloth. Silly waste of money, they are! I am in the midst of making some cloth napkins now, to replace the paper ones.
  4. I have a nice, new dehydrator that I have *gulp* never used. It's a couple of years old. What do you recommend I dehydrate first? I bought it to make fruit roll-ups, but never went out of my way to get large amounts of fruit, and eventually forgot about it. I had never thought of dehydrating for preps before. What kind of things work for that?
  5. The 1836 McGuffy's are FAR better than the red-covered revised editions. The revised are still moral, but no longer outrightly Christian. Make sure they're published by Mott Media (like the ones from CBD that Prayed2bamom linked to).

  7. More "C" words: Cramps (first aid for them) Cuts (first aid, again) Crab (food source if near the ocean) Chickens (care for, eggs, butchering, etc) Churn (for making butter) Cows (not as practical as chickens, but meat and milk....)
  8. I use Ambleside Online which is all literature. I have an entire bedroom wall to wall shelves filled with living books! I also have the entire closet filled with books for sale, so if you have any requests.....
  9. I'll be watching! I made plum syrup, not jam, but I think I can pop the tops and pectin it and try again. We are enjoying it on pancakes and ice cream as it is .
  10. I hear you with the air around here. No swimming, no bikes, no nothing except inside entertainment! The moon was red last night from all the smoke; sun dark today. What is it, 800 fires state-wide? Our pastor speculated at last night's Bible study that God is unhappy with the recent court decisions here in CA. But a shadow of what is to come!

At any pool supply store! It's called soda ash and (at least in CA) is well under $20 for all my family needs for a year (and there's ten of us).
  12. I made it once, in a cast iron pot that was too big, so it burned a little. It tasted good in the middle! I recently purchased the right size pot and look forward to making it again! Thanks for reminding me .
  13. When I notice a vet (usually they are wearing a WWII service hat around here), I always approach him and ask if I might shake his hand. I thank him for his service and (motioning to my children), thank him for protecting our family's freedom. I usually tell him that we, as a family, strive not to allow his service to have been in vain, and that we seek to use our freedoms wisely, and always honor Christ above all. I ask where he served (but only if I have the time to truly listen). I also thank his wife, if she's there, for her sacrifices during the war,, and it seems she's old enough to h
  14. I canned for the very first time today!! I put up 11 pints of plum jam. All three recipes I looked at did NOT call for pectin, so I didn't add any. I hope it turns out right!!
  15. Here are my husband and our lovely little ones:
  16. Great job! Isn't it nice when you finally see results?!
  17. I have home made recipes for OxiClean and Fabric softener. Here they are: http://www.homesteadblogger.com/mommaofmany/82367/ http://www.homesteadblogger.com/mommaofmany/82365/ I do separate out whites once or twice a year and bleach, if needed. I haven't really noticed dinginess in our laundry.
  18. What about BUCKETS? What kind, where to get them, how to seal them, etc.
  19. Botulism- know the signs for not eating that can of food!
  20. The two stores that carry SAF yeast were out all week. I almost has to buy Red Star! When it finally came in, there was no increase in price. I bought all four they got in. Others can use the Red Star! I spent lots of time reading various threads here! Education counts, right?!
  21. I LOVE this! Can I play, even though I'm new to the board?
