Genealogy Tip of the Day

Monday September 16, 2002

The records of an orphanage may contain important information about "lost" children. When children whose parent(s) died were too young to become apprentices or be placed in domestic service, they often were sent to an orphanage. Orphanages were operated by different entities, ranging from the county, the state, or a religious institution. As wards and financial dependents of these entities, there are often lists of these children, along with records of expenditures made on them. The records usually include their name, age, date and place of birth, parents' names, and names of any living relatives. County orphanage records are usually found in the actual county or at the state archives; state records can usually be located by contacting the state archives; and religious orphanage records may be located by contacting the state or regional offices of the religious sect.

It doesn't say who wrote the artical, but it was probably George G. Morgan, as he had been doing them.
