  1. Can I just tell you that I am officially TOO DARN OLD to pull an "all nighter" or even a "late nighter" to get a project done.

I was working on a client project yesterday (I work from home) and was determined to finish before logging off for the day. My reasoning was that I wanted to be off today. Well, I'm "off" all right. Zombie brain type of off. :mornincoffee:

I finished working well after midnight. By the time I got ready for bed, said my evening prayers, and turned out the lights it was nearly 2:00 am. I slept until until almost 8:00 but it was not enough, LOL. It's even scary to look in the mirror. They don't call it "beauty sleep" for nothin!

  2. Starting tomorrow, Food Lion ( at least  in WV) has chicken leg quarters for $.49 per pound. And get this - BACON  16 oz packages for $3.79!!

I'm going early tomorrow to do a bit of topping off. I can always manage to slip a few pounds of bacon into the freezer. Assuming they actually have it in stock.

Every time I go to the grocery store these day I wonder if it's the last "normal" time.

  3. I buy multiple packaged of American cheese at a time, but stack it in the back of the fridge. I don't get the individually wrapped slices. It usually has a "best buy" date at least six months out, and we go through a lot of American cheese. I do keep shredded cheeses in the freezer, primarily cheddar and mozzarella for cooking.

  4. Y'all inspired me to inventory our chest freezer. My tracking was wayyyy out of date. I asked DH to help me, knowing I cant reach down into the bottom.

It took us almost four hours to empty, remove frost/ice, inventory, and repack. We were both so tired out that we just had sandwiches for dinner, but it was totally worth it! I'm trying to reorganize and re-inventory all my shelf-stable storage with the idea to plan meals accordingly, for even distribution of meal-types over the coming months.

  5. Has anyone asked their pediatrician for a home-made formula recipe? I'd try that before this recipe. I'm also a proponent of pasteurization for milk intended for children. This recipe looks a little over the top to me.

Funny that she mentions "pet milk." The Pet Milk that was the baby formula recipe in the 50s is a brand name of canned condensed milk.

Here is a good article with the old recipe, and common-sense cautions.

Of course, mother's breast milk is best for babies, especially newborns.

  6. The label should say "fully cooked" if it's a heat-and-eat ham as many are.

Edited to add that I've tried canning dry beans without pre-soaking or parboiling. Didn't like it. I did some pintos that came out so dense that I worried they didn't process properly for safety.

I make several quarts of bean and ham soup whenever I have a hambone left over. I follow the Ball recipe, presoaking the beans, draining, then adding fresh water and proceeding to make the soup. It come out soooo good.

  7. The 13 bean soup came out great! DH really liked it. I put some diced onion, celery, and carrot in mine along with the hambone. Some pepper and a shake of seasoned salt. An hour or so before dinner I fished out the bone, removed the bone and tossed the chopped meat back in.

The soup was hearty with a tasty broth, not a thickened broth like navy bean soup. Yum!

  8. I made a deep dish quiche for dinner with leftover ham, spinach, and Swiss cheese. Served with salad on the side. DH went back for seconds.

I have a bag of 13 bean mix soaking overnight for tomorrow’s dinner. I’ll cook it with a leftover ham bone.

I’ve never used the 13 beans mix before. Any suggestions? I might toss in a can of diced tomatoes at the end.

  9. Books are a post-apocalyptic necessity, yes?

I’ve also accumulated multiples of reading glasses in different strengths. Years ago I was traumatized by a Twilight Zone episode with Burgess Meredith.

  10. Becca Anne, I'll try that four square breathing technique. I use controlled breathing when my asthma starts acting up.

Oh, and I have used good old Rescue Remedy for decades. Back when I would have PMS and now for high stress.

I like the idea of yoga and meditation, but I would probably need more of a guided meditation because it is difficult to clear my head and not make a grocery list, to-do list or get distracted by something else.

I have some guided meditations by Belleruth Naperstek. I find her voice and imagery to be soothing and effective. My grief therapist recommended her recordings after our son died and my situation at work was fraught with high stress.

I don't have this one, but it looks like it might be a good one for you.

Edited to add - Here's another one in digital format specifically for stress and anxiety attacks:
