  1. A long time ago it seems like I heard of an arthritis remedy that involved soaking raisins in gin and then eating the raisins. anyone ever heard of that. I have arthritis so bad in my finger joints I can hardly stand it sometimes. katmom

  2. I recently made a pot of posole for the first time. it turned out very good and meat was very tender but it had no red sauce in it..I served sliced green onions and lime wedges to squeeze over it..It was pretty good. but no red in it.

  3. I have 2 granddaughters age nearly 5 and nearly 3..Last July they came down with colds..Ultimately after normal care they just kept getting worse. Upon taking them to the doctor he says the older one has tonsillitus and the 3 year old has pneumonia..He prescribed medicines and over a few months they got better..But they never seemed really well..They are very active little girls and it seemed like they were better.. A week or so ago the oldest one started getting a sore throat and a temp of 103. The 3 year old developed a bad cough..Their mom took them i

back to pediatrician and its the same diagnosis as before. the doctor has prescribed steroids and meds for them and twice daily inhalation treatments for the older one and 4 times daily for the younger one..These kids get sick frequently and we are getting very concerned that something really bad is at work here. I just don't think its normal for kids to be sick so much..Has any one of you ever heard of problems like this? Ever had any experience with this. Isn't it odd that such a small child keeps getting pneumonia?

  4. I have made cranberry sauce many times for my family and this year something odd.The berries are really full of tiny hard seed that crunch in your teeth..this is weird..My middle daughter that lives in another county 40 miles away, had the same experience..shopped at different stores.all Ocean Spray. All were frozeen at time of purchase..I still have homecanned cran sauce from 2 years ago and you can<t see the seeds in it like these new batches..nobody is very happy about it. Thought I would mention it and see if this happened to anyone else. Katmom

  5. A very long time ago aomeone made this as part of our dinner. It was so good, I sure wished that I had got the recipe from her. but they were transferred and I thought of it too late (we were all U.S. Army) She made it with that italian style canned zucchini and tomatoes, and some kind of prepackaged croutons or stuffing mix. I have tried a few things but they just turn out mushy and unappetizing. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I used to be good at figuring out recipes. I know it must be pretty simple. Does anybody know? I'd sure appreciate it..Katmom

This might be helpful to those who bake a lot of cakes and don't want that "hump" in the middle of the layer that you have to trim to get a level layer cake. My old cake instructor told us to take an old towel. Cut it in strips that are long enough to fit aroud the sides of your cake pan with a small amount of overlap. Then you need to fold it lengthwise into 3 or 4 layers. Stitch up all the edges and end on your sewing machine.

THEN you soak the strip in cold water, wring it out and put it around your cake pan, securing it in place with a safety pin. It really does work. You can wash them and use them over and over. Wilton sells these strips made of that metallic looking stuff they used to make potholders out of, but these work just as well. I've never had one burn either. The cost, one old towel and a little effort. Katmom

  9. Our cats didn't ever "go" in our potted living room tree, but they did just want to pull the dirt out and play with it. So we just stuck bamboo skewers in the pot, sticking up out of the soil. They never go near it now. Of course, when we have company, they think we're kind of weird. Katmom

  11. I posted somethhing about this in another thread and I don't know if that was right but I just wondered if anyone has experience with a steam canner. They wouldn't be so heavy to pick up I think because they use less water. Katmom

  12. If anyone is interested. I got a catalog through the mail from a company called Kitchen Krafts.com. You can look them up on the web, too. I was looking today, and they have pectin for canning in 1# and 10# quantities. It said that the 1# quantity was enough for 8 home batches of preserving. The price was $10.95. I didn't check the shipping cost. They also had a Lite Pectin called Gel EZ. It was $13.50 for 10# and is supposed to make 8 batches. Does anyone think this might be economical? Katmom
