Do any of you have a Presto canner with just a weight? I saw one at WM Sunday and almost bought it but since it just had weight I didn't. I was wondering of you could buy a gauge for a presto.

I made my own earth bozes last year

This year they have posted a new and improved homemade earth box
http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/c...1044214330.html
I will use the same ones I used last year. However I will plant different stuff in them. I think I will try the 3 sister technique this year. The tomatoes loved them, the corn did okay but I think I had too much in one container. I did not have to water as often and had I mulched better I probably could have gone futher between watering.
This year I am making more boxes. Warning though if it is hot and dry in your area your container garden will cook real fast. Words of experience here.

Andrea have you tried gowing potatoes in old tires or kiddie pools? I have had several people tell me how they do this but no one has ever said if they have good results. Anybody?

The university has its own well and considering it ran they asked me to stop my watering. They stopped watering and stopped planting. They have been buying water from the county all year and now the country has restrictions. So that is why I am going with gray water this summer. I figure as many clothes as I wash a week I will have more than enough to keep my garden green. I just won't use the wash water from the whites don't want to put bleach water on my plants. -
Hot diggit dog fruit trees in containers
I had a container garden last year and it did pretty good until the drought and heat wave hit. Then they put water restrictions on us. This year I am going to use my gray water for the garden.

for the information. As soon as we get moved I am going to set up a compost pile. Kind of hard when you live in an apartment. But I know where one is and I have access to it anytime I want or need compost.

Dogmom do you use the process if so how does it work for you. I am a little concerned because it gets so hot here I am afraid the heat will kill the worms.

Another twist on the brownie mix.
Added only one egg and 1/4 cup oil 1/3 cup peanut butter and topped it with choc chips. It was good but dry and crumbly. Oh well back to the drawing board.
Any suggestions as to making this more of a fudgey brownie?

A twist on the Baking Mix ...
2 1/2 cups of baking mix
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons of oregano (dry)
2 tablespoons of parsley (dry)
1 cups of Italian cheese
1 tablespoon of garlic powder
Mix all ingredients together spoon into muffin pan. Bake on 350 degrees until golden brown.
Comments from the peanut gallery (aka the males of the household )
edited to add the garlic

Corn muffins were good also. The only complaint was they were white and not yellow. The guys think cornmeal should be yellow but they ate them all and wondered if there was more.
Next batch I will use yellow cornmeal.

Okay pulled out the brownie mix last night and made a batch of brownies following the recipe. If you like cake type brownies you will love these. The batch I made yesterday is gone. The guys like more of the fudgey type brownie so I will decrease the eggs and add a little more oil maybe even throw in some chocolate chips.
Using the cornbread mix today. I am making corn muffins. Stay turned for an update!

Tha is one thing i still have to add to the preps, is the toilet repair kit.
Dental floss or fishing line works wonders. We had the same problem and hubby was on the road and I did a mommy fix on the toilet. Actually I think when we moved out of that house it was still tied up with dental floss. -

The items that don't have shorting in them...Can you keep them in the old fashion mason jars...or just zip locks...Why do you keep them in the freezer, which I think is a great idea but, can you keep them with out a freezer if the power goes out for any lenth of time. How you don't mind my asking...
I put mine in the freezer because I made up such a large batch and didn't realize it before I started I only had large ziplock bags and only pint jars. So I just put all the brownie mix in one bag, muffin mix in another and the bisquick in a 3rd bag. I knew it would take several months (possible 6 months) and I didn't want it to start tasting "old" In the recipes it says you can store them on the shelf. I see no problem storing them in jars. -

UPDATE ON MANUAL!!!!!!
We are rolling again; we hope to have a draft ready to proof around the end of March. Then there will be a special spot here just for the manual where members of Mrs. S. can go and print their own copies. The goal is to have this ready so everyone will have their own copies before the shindig at Darlene's next year.
Please be patient we are working just as fast as our little computers will let us.

Thanks Snowmom, I was online today and found a Presto canner for the same price as the one at WM but it had a guage. It also had free shipping. It will get me started.
