Yep I'm looking forward to reading and copying these threads, if that is ok with you Mother.

I made my first batch of soap last weekend and yesterday I did my second batch. I used the *WM* recipe for the first and it was lye heavy--my intentions are to turn that into laundry soap.
My second batch is drying out right now--I cut it as soon as it set up well enough--and its' not crumbly like the first batch. This time I superfatted by 7% and used only 4lbs of lard and 1 lb of coconut oil (for the lathering).
and I must admit, soaping is FUN!

*giggle* We use our homemade chevre cheese on them...often flavored with ranch.
They are yummy! and good for a quick side dish for the mid day meal.

I just let them cool off and put them in a ziplock baggie. Around here, they have been eaten within a day or so, so I have no idea how long they would last. lol

As requested elsewhere, here is the cracker recipe I've been using
4 cups flour (i used whole wheat)
1 t baking powder
3/4 lard/shortening (i used coconut oil)
1 1/3 c milk
Mix together well. Roll out very very thin. Place on greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt as desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes until crispy.
Variations:
I've also put some melted butter on the top (similar to a ritz cracker) before sprinkling with salt.
I've been thinking about adding some shredded cheese to the dough for a cheezy cracker, but haven't tried it yet.
Another variation I've been considering is sprinkling ranch dressing mix (can use homemade mix) on the top for ranchy cracker.

I make a glycerin tincture myself instead of using alcohol. And while I can't make gylcerin myself in a SHTF situation, I do have it stockpiled.
