  1. Start watching real estate ads. It will give you the inspiration you need in order to save for your dreams. It will also give you a chance to learn what the real estate values are and how often land is offered. Start planning exactly what you want to do and how much land it will take to accomplish it. Let people know what you want; they may be able to help you find the place you want. You never know when the friend of a friend of your great-aunt Susie will be ready to sell, but she may be willing to sell to you at a better price than she would list it for. Plan and save so you will be able to jump when you find the perfect property. You should also start gardening now, if you don't already. If you rent and aren't allowed to put one in, there's always container gardening. You can even grow dwarf fruit trees in containers. Learn to can produce even if you have to buy it at a farmers' market or the grocery store. It will be a lot less frustrating trying it before you have 20 lbs. of green beans and no idea how to can them. DH and I are still living in town on almost 1 acre. We bought a 13.5 acre farm this summer, but can't move yet as the house needs a lot of work. Here in town, we have apple trees, a large garden, and some chickens. You might be able to raise some chickens, too. If you have a small area that you can fence off and a large dog house, you can have a few chickens. This is assuming that local ordinances allow them. Some cities do not, but some will allow you to have 3 or 4-enough for some fresh eggs. We have 20-we're not really supposed to have any, but we live on the very edge of town and the neighbors don't mind so we're pretty much left alone. (A few fresh eggs can really help keep the neighbors happy. ) Take the time to write down all you want to do, and try to keep adding a little bit of it to what you already do even before you move. You might be surprised at how much really can be done living in town. Good luck!
