Maineiac
Heard this from a friend who was a park ranger at Glacier Park two summers. Hikers in Glacier Park were urged to carry a can of the chili pepper spray for bears and to wear little bells on their clothing to let the bears know something was coming as most attacks were when the person startled the bear. When asked how to tell if Grizzly's were in the area the advice was to check the droppings as they could tell if the bear was a Black or a Grizzly. Someone would eventually ask how you could tell just from the droppings and the answer was that Black bear droppings smell like berries and have little rodent bones in them since they eat a lot of mice. Grizzly bear droppings smell like Chili Pepper and have little bells in it. Link to comment
