Other Uses For Spices

PEPPER: Cut a square of cheesecloth and fill the center with the black pepper, tie the ends together and you have a quick sachet that will repel moths. Sprinkle black pepper around your hedges to keep unwanted animals away.

VANILLA: Add two teaspoons of vanilla extract to a gallon of paint and stir well. The vanilla will neutralize the paint fumes. Soak some cotton balls with vanilla and put them in a dish in your refrigerator, it will help absorb odors.

CREAM OF TARTAR: Mix cream of tartar and water to form a paste, it will get rid of lime-scale, and it will also help treat ring-around the collar stains. If a recipe calls for buttermilk and you don’t have any, mix one cup of milk together with one and three-quarters tablespoons cream of tartar and you have an instant substitute.

FOOD COLORING: For a fun project with kids, change the color of flowers with food coloring. Add a few drops to a glass of water, put some white flowers in the glass and leave it overnight. In the morning the flowers will have absorbed the color like magic.
