  1. I have the old and updated versions of his Self-Sufficency Manual. IMO it's a great book. Covers so much material from butchering a pig to loomweaving and spinning. He is dedicated to sustainable small scale agriculture, husbandry in the oldest sense of the word. If I could have only one "survival" book, this one would be it.
  2. I got this recipe from a newspaper, it's by their resident nutritionist: Jane Clarke. I've made it a couple of times, used it on it's own as a pasta sauce, with tinned white beans as alternative to baked beans and as the base for a curry sauce. The veggies are all hidden, so it's great for sneaking them into vegphobic kids (or men).   3. I just read the Earth's Children books recently. I can imagine how someone so young would be upset or confused by parts of it, even if the whole was stimulating and educational. I don't read much survival themed fiction though: it's too depressing, I wind up feeling that if that's the kind of world we will live in then survival may not be worth it at all.

  6. I've just finished For Whom the Bell Tolls. My first attempt at Hemmingway. I absolutely loved it, his writing style is so vivid, and not as depressing as so many ppl have told me. Next up, I think I'll go for Lord of the Rings, it's an old favourite Happy reading.

  9. I've been having trouble finding reliable information about natural contraceptives that would still be available in the event of a long term crisis. I use DepoProvera, which lasts for three months, and keep a big stash of condoms, but even these mostly have a use by date no longer than a couple of years. I have information from my GP about the rhythm method, but ideally I'd like to find out if there are herbs/plants that I could grow which have contraceptive actions. I read that in India, they use papaya for this purpose, but I wouldn't be able to grow that in this temperate climate, especiall

  12. I agree, cookiejar, I read them between age of 7 and 10 and loved it, but when I tried to go back as an adult, it kinda spoiled it, the tone is just too irritating. But absolutely give to imaginative kids, I've been a sci-fi/fantasy nut ever since.

  14. I dip mine in whisked eggs, then in flour, then again in eggs and finally in sesame seeds. Our Laotian market gets the seeds very inexpensive. Then I bake rather than fry the thighs.
  15. I just made bagels and they looked so pretty in the boiling water. After I baked them they looked just like they do at the store but they are so heavy. Does anybody make bagels who can give me advice?
