  1. I'm going to try and get a few blankets and scarves knit. Will need to see how much time I can manage. I pulled almost half of DS1's scarf apart last night because there were a few mistakes that were driving me nuts so I'm almost back to where I was. Hoping to get it finished before the end of next week.

  2. I read somewhere to keep plan pringles, the original ones, on hand and they help.

Chicken soup and ginger ale (Vernor's) growing up, the chiropractor swore by it.

I wonder if that's what DS1 had but a mild case when we were in Maryland.

  3. I have 30 lbs. of chicken hindquarters cooked. I'm taking a break letting them cool enough to handle before canning them up. I'm anxious to see how many pints I end up.

Do tell! They are on sale this week here too! I didn't want to fill the freezer with them.

They are on sale here, too. I figured I'd run out and pick up several pounds to can in a few weeks.

  4. I broke down and bought a case of microwave popcorn today for DS1 for vacation and when he needs a quick snack and I can't make actual popcorn. I also bought a 12.5 lbs container of popcorn kernels (that lasts a few months here. lol)

The ready cut melon creeps me out, I just think it looks slimy. But there is nothing like cutting melon and having the kids "sneak" it faster than you can cut it. Never thought about the shredded cheeses, I buy it in bulk and separate it into bags and throw in the freezer. Scratch that, I buy blocks of mozzarella and shred for pizza.

  5. Freezing usually makes the tomatoes mushy as their cells rupture. So for texture, just blend it first, so now it is "sauce" instead of "salsa".

Tangent: I finally figured out how to get my food processor to chop into small pieces without blending smooth. While that may be a no-brainer to others, it was confounding me. And it takes way too much time to cut everything by hand. And since salsa is one of my favorites, I did some playing. This simple recipe was a big hit.

2 part onion (bermuda, sweet yellow, whatever)

4 parts tomato (I like romas)

    1 part cilantro

    jalapenos to taste*

    squirt of lemon or lime

and here's the kicker - 1 big tablespoon of orange marmalade About 1/8 of whatever you're using for onion.

    * char jalapenos with torch or on grill for a smokey flavor. Do inside only with a powerful vent fan.

There really isn't much you can't add in, but I went too heavy on the peppers as I used habeneros instead of jalalepneos so I was looking for a way to cut the heat and give it a citrus flavor. I saw the orange marmalade and WOW did it change the whole dynamic.

Are you going to share your discovery? I had never even thought about it, I just do it all by hand.

  6. Glad you are getting the much needed rain. I heard last night most of the state needs a good foot of rain. We had a quick shower this morning, too.

I saw the national map last night on the weather channel and was amazed we weren't part of the drought. We are definitely dry but I know not as bad as others because the corn in the non-irrigated fields have corn, it's small but it's there.

  7. No rain this morning but we had the dark skies, lightening and thunder.

Glad you are getting some of it.

Dee~ Those pictures are amazing. The creek reminds me of the river by my parents. I've never seen sandbars in it and they are there. My mom grew up on one of the little riverside towns and she said she's never seen that (she's in her late 60's).

  8. Stephanie - I've seen the youtube video. You have a deep southern accent this is coming from the girl whose friends in Indianapolis would tease for having a heavy Chicago accent (especially the word traffic). Your southern accent is charming and lovely!
