The possibility of the Bird Flu coming closer

Here is just part of what I found at the following site.

Each day the possibility of a Bird Flu pandemic comes dangerously

closer. We want to help you and your family prepare before it strikes.

The progression of Avian Influenza into an efficient human-to-human form is becoming more likely. No one can prevent this epidemic, but we want to keep our families safe and protected in the event that the outbreak occurs. We are here for the realists. Helping others get past the obstacles and to create a plan for both avoiding infection and for having the proper supplies is our goal. We have put quite a lot of thought and preparation into what we (and many of our greatest scientists) believe may be inevitable.

If a SuperFlu sweeps the globe, who will haul away the garbage? Who will grow, package, and transport food and other necessities? Stock and sell the groceries we need to survive? Protect us from criminals? Keep electricity, gas, and water flowing?

'Ted Koppel on Meet The Press, Dec. 25, 2005:

"You have to alarm people because until people are sufficiently alarmed or they're not going to listen to what has to happen. What you don't hear in that sound bite, and what is rarely spoken of, especially among politicians, is that the kind of vaccine that would be necessary to treat the avian flu does not exist. It cannot exist until the strain of avian flu is developed and can be sampled and can be tested and then and only then can you begin to develop the vaccine.

In order to develop sufficient quantities of that vaccine to vaccinate people twice you're going to need so many hundreds of millions of doses that it will take a minimum of two to three years to get them. In other words, by the time you get them, it'll be too late to treat the people who get the flu. Obviously, that raises questions as what needs to be done, what can be done. I tried just before I left Nightline to do a broadcast in which we brought some of the best experts on and said "Tell us what we need to know, tell us what we need to do." Among the things we need to do, and it sounds horrific to say it, is to put in a decent supply of food and water and whatever medicine is needed by a family, in each American home, now, before it's too late."

"The situation right now is the most significant setup for a very serious public health crisis that I've seen in my 30 years in this business. We're sitting on a time bomb.

------ Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota

From World Health Organization website...If an influenza pandemic appears, we could expect the following:

· Given the high level of global traffic, the pandemic virus may spread rapidly, leaving little or no time to prepare.

· Vaccines, antiviral agents and antibiotics to treat secondary infections will be in short supply and will be unequally distributed. It will take months before any vaccine becomes available.

· Medical facilities will be overwhelmed.

· Widespread illness may result in sudden and potentially significant shortages of personnel to provide essential community services.

We'd all like to do the right things to protect our family in the face of an emergency. Recent hurricanes have shown us that it wouldn't take much to interrupt our food, water, or utility supplies for days, weeks, or even longer. Many people are aware there could be shortages during a flu epidemic, but they won't ACT until it's too late. They just don't like to think about it, or they think it's silly, 'like Y2K'. But a technological problem which was solved with hard work is not the same thing as a deadly Avian Influenza epidemic. It's easy to become complacent, to feel an immunity from disaster. And there will always be the naysayer, and the "my government will take care of me" types. Some of us are just not sure where to start to prepare.

How secretive you want to be about your plan, and how far you feel that you should go to protect your supplies when someone else might want to take them with violence, are all very personal issues...but ones that you must wrestle with yourself. Very few of us can afford to take care of more than our immediate families, and we must plan accordingly. We studied previous pandemics, and concluded that the survivors were those who avoided infection.

During a influenza pandemic, you may be required to spend hours or even days in long "bread lines" of infected people to receive limited supplies of food and water.

Don't be in line for your can of Spam.

We know you'd like to prepare for bird flu in a reasonable manner, and to get the things you will need while they are still available. Many absolute necessities, such as water purifiers, radios not dependent on batteries, and safety masks for situations when you must leave the house, will be gone from the shelves at the first hint of Avian Flu. The government is warning everyone, but taking their usual care not to tell us 'too much'. Foreign governments appear to be covering up cases.

Here are the facts: A vaccine won't be readily available for H5N1 for many months or even years from the time the bird flu influenza strain mutates to an efficient human form. Recent European trials have been disappointing in regard to any hope of an Avian Flu vaccination.

There are only enough anti-virals like Tamiflu and Relenza for a tiny percentage of the population (which will be given to medical workers), and there is doubt in the medical community that these anti-virals will work on the H5N1 virus. Tamiflu and Relenza don't prevent bird flu, anyway. At most, they might make the bird flu less deadly for those who have it.

The global business community hasn't planned for how to stay in business during a flu pandemic, and they will be at a standstill when their workers are too sick or too scared to show up. Have you noticed that none of the scientists will say that it won't happen? They do all seem to agree that it is inevitable, sooner or later. We have built this website to share our thoughts and idea with you.

WE ARE TELLING INDIVIDUALS TO GET PREPARED.

During the 1918 influenza epidemic, people often became sick in the morning and were dead that same night! This virus was deadly. The death rate was reported at around 70%. Not to mention that these kinds of influenza make people so horribly sick that even if they don't die, they wish they could. The health care community readily admits that it would be impossible to even begin to cope with a disaster of this magnitude. What should we do?

The answer is to not catch it.

Plan ahead to be one of the first to eliminate contact with sources of the virus, not one of the last. Lock-down with your family until the pandemic has passed. Stay out of public places. Have your supplies so you don't have to stand in lines to get necessities. As an individual with loved ones that you hope will live through this, it is the only sensible solution.

The answer is to have the things you need to:

Bug-In: To have food, water, and the things you need to survive for a period of time, in your home, even without public utilities or other services.

Bug-Out: To take a portion of your supplies and get out of your area in a timely manner when the area becomes a safety problem. An example would be roving gangs wanting to steal your food or commit violence.

We hope to introduce some ideas to you that you may not have thought of. We refuse to hide our heads in the sand - and we hope that you are not in the vast majority that believes that "your government" will take care of you. You can see that if hundreds of thousands, or even millions of us become gravely ill, that there are no hospitals large enough to house the sick. Reasonable people should be able to imagine that for months each of us could be "on our own" without gasoline, groceries, water, and power. The idea is frightening, but the situation is not impossible - with proper planning, you can keep your family safe.

I don't know if this site has been posted before or not, but I just found it and thought I shoud post it here.
