Guest Guest
Some people don't understand why we talk about gardening, canning, freezing, drying, etc. here at Mrs S. Some of the things we learned as y2k appoached was that: * Everyone needs a variety of storage means. If all your food is frozen, it won't last long. * If the electric supply is disrupted, it will affect shipping as well as stores and our own homes. * Grocery stores today rely on the shipping industry to bring them food regularly. They keep only a couple of days' worth of food on the premises or nearby. * Chances are, in an emergency situation, your neighbors are more likely to have guns than food stored. Desperate people use desperate means to obtain what they need. We saw the devastation mad cow disease caused Great Britain. It COULD happen here. In today's world, terrorists have come into the picture. Here's link about what the USDA is watching: http://start.earthlink.net/newsarticle?cat...D7PS73DG0_story You don't have to can, dry, and garden, just prepare in a sensible way for emergencies. Remember you might need to be ready to share. (Beans and rice together form a complete protein source, and peanut butter is healthy.) Home gardening and canning & dehydrating are a lot of work, but you have the satisfaction of knowing EXACTLY what's in your food when you eat it. Think it over; take the idea seriously. Dee
Thats an excellent article Cat. Maybe the government thinks there is something to this stockpiling even if they only tell you to do it for a three day supply. Informative reading.. Thanks! Quote Link to comment

Guest Guest
For anyone they may not have thought of this, if there's a bakery in the grocery store you shop in they usually get icing's in plastic buckets with lids and are normally glad to give them to anyone who ask for them. They can be cleaned and used to store food in. I have brought home a ton of them especially when I worked in the bakery. Quote Link to comment
