  1. For us anyway being that neither one of us uses salt to flavor food we just make things like that without it. When we eat out we can really taste the salt added to foods.

Now some things like bread need the salt to help make the yeast work, so check first.

    PS by the way . . . . . . . . . GOOD QUESTION!

  2. Well folks here it is the first day of Summer and the weather is doing it's best to let everyone here know that !

96 here right now (at 3:15) and still going a bit higher before it cools off later tonight.

Radio keeps saying to stay inside if at all possible! <--- I am doing THAT!

I was outside in garden at 5:30 am and it was getting hot then.

Inside it is cool, seeing we have most windows covered with dark blue 'shade' curtains and upstairs are blackout curtains so no sun getting in here.

No air condition here so we do what we have to to stay cool in hot weather.

I am sure we will be sleeping downstairs in the Pioneer Room tonight.

  3. Hey Homeschooling Moms....................................

OK, I don't know IF this has been 'talked' about here yet but-

I just read in the local newspaper that, for New York anyway, the deadline to sign up to Homeschool is July 1st!

And that is coming up FAST!

Seems you have to do that and then they send you out forms to fill in and get back before Aug. 15 or else you will be sending your kids to school no matter what you had planed to do.

Is it like this in all states?

If so then if you were on the fence about homeschooling NOW is the time to decide.

As one that was 'part-time' Homeschooled in the early 60's and had to fight with the schools about it, boy do I have stories for that.

As to what to do when freezer fails (or get unplugged)..................................

IF it is a fairly good one (good seal) Then the food in it SHOULD stay cold for a while (IF you don't keep opening it to SEE if the food is bad yet?)

Your sounds like most of it should have still been frozen IF you had it more than 3/4 full (always add something even bags of ice to get it over the 3/4 mark) a Full Freezer will stay cold longer and it also is cheaper to run that way.

Again it all depends on HOW long it was unplugged?

  6. Michael, have you tried zucchini lasagne? Slice the big ones thin and use the slices for the noodles.

Yes, do that with the 'bats' that get to big if we have lots of zucchini bread on hand. BUT the first few get made for this or just stir fried.

Soon it will be "Don't leave your car unlock anywhere near a farm or you will find Zucchini in it when you return. :sHa_sarcasticlol:

  7. WE have just 'cheap' black fabric ( the part facing out turns gray from the sun so not seen as blackout curtains from the road) that I put a big hem in top and little hem in bottom and use between curtains and windows. Have them in upstairs bedrooms to help keep them cool in summer (no light get in to heat up room). Also in some rooms downstairs to keep them in the dark during the day. other rooms without them get warm - but all you have to do is walk into a 'dark' room and feel how much cooler it is without air conditioning. All we have is a small fan to move the air around when we are in the room.

  10. Had a great day (I think?) ...........................

Woke up at 4:40am! Started at 5 am with a fire in our firepit / firplace (with coffee and Danishes) and watched the sunrise - nice!

Then left to go on a nature hike I have dubbed "Happy Froggers Day" (think happy Father’s Day) Because it goes through a swamp (with boardwalks) and in the morning the frogs are so loud with all the crocking going on as they great the day! It is so cool! And also lots of birds (nothing new to add to our life list) and insects and butterflies and this time water snakes! Lori NO LIKE! But she kept walking along the boardwalk. Then back home to "camp" (tent set up in backyard) and a 12 noonish cookout of sausage (on buns), potato salad, baked beans, and peppers and onions all done outside on the grill. Then in the afternoon sat around and read some, watched the hummingbirds at the feeders (always fun!) and other birds coming to feeders in yard. Now in to make supper (????) then back out for fire (when it starts to get darker) and we are also walking to the ice cream shop for milk shakes and bringing them home for around the fireplace as we watch the fireflies that have just started to be in all the bushes.

OK, So other than THAT . . . . Not much going on today I guess.

  13. bet it makes you feel good - knowing you WON the battle!

    ..............................well this time anyway!

Like the others I too like to get out there and weed (making sure I get the root too so they are harder to grow back), Like to get out there early in the morning to do it with the birds singing and a cool breeze blowing and the smell of the flowers all around. Sometimes I forget how long I was out there and before long I go to stand and OUCH!

I better go in and sit a spell.
