  1. We picked up a pretty good size load of bagged up leaves and hauled them to the homestead. Hopefully we'll be getting lots more calls :-) Leaves compost down very quick and the worms love it. We both did catch a whiff of sinus, perhaps from playing in the leaves? But we're both on the mend. Mixed up some Elderberry syrup and took some, also some Vit. C and Echinacia. Used a nasal spray for a day to clear things up. We'll have to be a bit more careful handling the leaves that have been so composted down...these were from last year and were ready for the garden bed! LOL

If you can stand to use a Neti Pot, I found that has helped with my sinus so far this fall. Takes a little getting used to though.

And if you need more leaves, feel free to come to my house and get all you want. I have lots and lots of leaves. :happy0203:

  2. I added some vinegar to my canner too when canning. Helps keep the jars from getting cloudy from hard water.

I just clean my canner with soap and water after it's cooled down to handle. Once it's good and dry, you can pack it with newspaper at the end of the canning season to absorb any odors left over. Also store with the lid flip upside down inside the canner. That's what the manual recommends, plus it saves space and protects the pressure gauge.

  3. I don't know if this allowed and if not, then just delete this post. Anyway, I wanted to share some pictures of some cute aprons I found on Ebay and the vendor. Nice lady in NC that I've been emailing. She gardens and cans too.

She goes by gran-ree on Ebay. Below are the 2 aprons I've bought from here. There are 2 pockets on her aprons which I like.

  4. Thanks Ambergris!

Mt Rider - Everyone around me is fighting blight. That's a given around here it seems. I had seen anthracnose before, but not this bad. If one of my neighbors doesn't have any, I will hit the farmer's market this coming weekend.

  5. All of my tomatoes seem to have anthracnose....those black spot/bruises on the ripened fruit. :sad-smiley-012: I've attached a picture. Not all are quite that bad. Some only have a couple of spots.

Someone told me not to eat them. I've been eating them after cutting the bad spots out and have been okay. But now I'm uncertain.

My question to ya'll is are these safe to eat or not? :scratchhead:

I don't think I'll be canning any of my bruschetta made from them though.

This really bums me out. I've been looking forward to making that with my own garden fresh tomatoes.

    Opinions? Thoughts?

  6. It's been in the upper 90's with heat indexes in 100s for the past week. We had some rain move in last Friday and Saturday morning came a gully washer. Lost power twice. Now it's so humid, I have not been able to see out my windows for several days because of all the condensation.

I feel like this dog in the pic every time I have to go outside.

  7. Made sweet pickle relish this weekend. I put the onions in it anyway since DH was making faces about the bell pepper. :happy0203: Got 5 1/2 half pints.

Thinking about making bread and butter pickles next.

Homesteader - That is neat about your grandmother and her SIL.

I just hope pickled beets taste better than plain. I tried some store bought (Libby's) for the first time ever a few weeks ago. :yuk: My dogs liked them though.

  8. Rather than just omitting them.. I would use more cucumber in place of the onions. So instead of 4 cups cukes and 2 cups onions.. you'd do 6 cups cukes. That way the bulk of your recipe stays the same with regards to the vinegar and spices and all.

That's what I figured I would do. I knew to keep the bulk the same.

Now he's whining about the bell pepper in it. <_< I told him the commercial store bought stuff had it in there and he just made a face at me. Sheesh!

Thanks for the help ladies. I'll let you know how it turns out if I get to try it.
