FDA approves Linzess to treat certain cases of irritable bowel syndrome and constipation

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Linzess (linaclotide) to treat chronic idiopathic constipation and to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults.

According to the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 63 million people are affected by chronic constipation. Chronic idiopathic constipation is a diagnosis given to those who experience persistent constipation and do not respond to standard treatment. Additionally, an estimated 15.3 million people are affected by IBS. IBS-C is a subtype characterized mainly by abdominal pain and by hard or lumpy stools at least 25 percent of the time and loose or watery stools less than 25 percent of the time.

Linzess is a capsule taken once daily on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before the first meal of the day. Linzess helps relieve constipation by helping bowel movements occur more often. In IBS-C, it may also help ease abdominal pain.

“No one medication works for all patients suffering from these gastrointestinal disorders,” said Victoria Kusiak, M.D., deputy director of the Office of Drug Evaluation III in FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “With the availability of new therapies, patients and their doctors can select the most appropriate treatment for their condition.”

The safety and effectiveness of Linzess for the management of IBS-C were established in two, double-blind studies. A total of 1,604 patients were randomly assigned to take 290 micrograms of Linzess or a placebo for at least 12 weeks. Results showed Linzess was more effective in reducing the amount of abdominal pain and increasing the number of complete spontaneous bowel movements compared with placebo.

The safety and effectiveness of Linzess for the management of chronic idiopathic constipation also were established in two, double-blind studies. A total of 1,272 patients were randomly assigned to take Linzess at doses of 145 mcg or 290 mcg or a placebo for 12 weeks. Results from these studies showed patients taking Linzess experienced more complete spontaneous bowel movements than those taking the placebo. The 290 mcg dose is not approved for chronic constipation because studies indicated it was no more effective than the 145 mcg dose.

Linzess is approved with a Boxed Warning to alert patients and health care professionals that the drug should not be used in patients 17 years of age and younger. The most common side effect reported in during the clinical studies was diarrhea.

Linzess is co-marketed by Ironwood Pharmaceuticals Inc., based in Cambridge, Mass., and Forest Pharmaceuticals Inc., based in St. Louis, Mo.

FDA approves new treatment for severe neutropenia in certain cancer patients

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Sicor Biotech’s tbo-filgrastim to reduce the time certain patients receiving cancer chemotherapy experience severe neutropenia, a decrease in infection-fighting white blood cells called neutrophils.

Tbo-filgrastim is intended for use in adults who have cancers other than blood or bone marrow cancers (non-myeloid malignancies) and are taking chemotherapy drugs that cause a substantial decrease in the production of neutrophils in the bone marrow. This reduction in neutrophils may lead to infection and fever (febrile neutropenia).

Tbo-filgrastim stimulates the bone marrow to increase the production of neutrophils. It is administered as an injection beginning 24 hours after chemotherapy treatment.

“Supportive care products, such as tbo-filgrastim, reduce or allow for more rapid recovery from side effects of cancer treatments,” said Richard Pazdur, M.D., director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Tbo-filgrastim was evaluated in a clinical study of 348 adult patients with advanced breast cancer receiving treatment with the anti-cancer drugs doxorubicin and docetaxel. Patients were randomly assigned to receive tbo-filgrastim, a placebo, or a non-U.S.-approved filgrastim product, a drug that also stimulates neutrophil production by the bone marrow. The effectiveness of tbo-filgrastim was determined based on study results that showed that patients receiving tbo-filgrastim recovered from severe neutropenia in 1.1 days compared with 3.8 days in those receiving the placebo.

Tbo-filgrastim’s safety was evaluated in three clinical studies composed of 680 adults with breast cancer, lung cancer, or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma who received high-dose chemotherapy that reduces bone marrow cells (myeloablative chemotherapy). The most common side effect observed in those receiving tbo-filgrastim was bone pain.

Tbo-filgrastim is manufactured by Sicor Biotech UAB, a member of Teva Corporation.

  16. "Wormguy, just out of curiosity why didn't the other guy, his wife and daughters help? We've learned a few things from hard experiences too. I'm glad you made it through the summer!"

The other guy stated that he didn't have the time and was too tired, busy, etc. The wife is a hairdresser and has a bad back, the children are well...children and I didn't see what I considered effort to encourage or make them help.

The guy does have a stressful job but I don't think he understands that when things need to be done they have to be done then and not when a person is not tired. Also weekends are not to rest up, they are there also to work when it is needed.

Next year he will not be included in the gardening at this location. He has made the comment that he feels that the ground is not good for crops. He has a samll garden at home and everyone does help out there but I guess it is a different story when you can walk out the back door and work for 15-20 minutes instead of driving 25 minutes one way and having to work for and hour or two.

Yes, I was very dissapointed in the lack of help all around. I had high hopes that we would have a great season but alas, it was not to be. I am going to take some soil samples and get them tested so that next year I will be better prepared to plant the crops that will do the best.

  17. I'm confused, when a reciepe calls for 10 pounds of fruit do I weigh it before I peel, pit, & cut up or is it weighed before it's peeled, pited, or cut up? There is quite a bit of waste like when peeling pears or apples. Any one?

  18. If I were alone and could stand the cold I would go to the Idaho, Montana area. Since I don't care for that much cold I would go to Northern Georgia, East Tennessee, East Kentucky, or West-West VA. That would put me in the hills so to say but there is good land there and folks tend do to help each other. I think in all of these places one could find land at a decent price. I just wish I could do it.
