What a superb article. I realized several of the things he described, a long time ago. There is no way that 3 people, if you count my 80 year old Mom, can protect two levels of 1800 sq ft house. We live in a country suburb, but still live in a neighborhood. Survival would require the cooperation of neighbors. No one can go this alone.
The number one thing that I realized a long time ago:
"We figured that there are worse things than death."
I realize that there is only so much that I can do. I can prepare to the best of my ability, I can co-op with my neighbor, but I cannot wholly defend myself. If the gangs come around my way, no way can my revolver compete with their M-16's. If the police want to search my home, their fire power will certainly overpower mine. And truly, there are some things I would rather die before experiencing. I can only do what I can do, and the rest I leave in the Lord's hands. If my time on this earth is over, then so be it. This is the only way I have found to have peace within myself.
