  1. When something goes out I get the best quality we can afford that matches what I have. That being said...this house came with one of those flat top stoves that I don't like so, even though it works fine, I found a used propane stove to replace it.
  2. I opened it as soon as I saw that I was to "ignore" it!! lol

I've yet to get to this. If I understand it correctly I can use what I have on FamilySearch.org and just prove the most recent generations. I need to call my Grandma and see if she can get me a birth certificate (or something anyway) for my Grandpa.

Does anyone have experience navigating the Daughters of the American Revolution application process? Hints or tips on making sure I have all my ducks in a row?
  5. Ok, looks like GGpa came from Germany and married an American. I found the marriage licence and her parents names, but nothing on him yet. Everyone wants money to see passenger lists of immigrants.
  6. for Jews to make up false backgrounds? (I am assuming they were Jewish) According to my Grandma, her grandparents left Germany "because it was getting bad with the war and all" and changed their name from "Hirschmann" (sp) to Harshman. I have their names (not GGma's surname) and birth dates from a family Bible and I think I found Grandma Ida (who died in 1914, when my great grandpa was 2). What I found is from the 1910 Census (I realize the war started later, but things were BAD BAD there way before then) and it says she was born in Kansas. ?? It has the correct spouse and my GGpa's sister. So now what? Is there a better way to know for sure? She is the ONLY Ida Harshman, there is also and Ida Hirschman, but her spouce had a different name. As a side question, if I can confirm that they were Jewish, does that mean I'm Jewish? My understanding is that being Jewish isn't just about religion, but also about your blood line, akin to your race, is that right?
  7. I'm with you Deb. Stocking up isn't an option at all anymore. I'm trying to find a way to get a garden going (again) but it's a wait and see situation.
  8. We thought so. So far I've traced one line back to the late 900s. It's a lot easier when you have "Sirs" and "Lords" and Barons" because they kept the lists even then!
  9. "The Riot Act" by someone? Ever wonder where the term came from?? This Guy Henry Sacheverell: In a nut shell he wrote a couple of sermons that the Catholic church was not fond of. He was tried, suspended and the sermons burned. The people rioted (Sacheverell riots) which lead to the passing of a law called, "The Riot Act". Turns out, Sir Henry Sacheverell is my 15th Great Grand Father. Looks like we have a long line of speaking up for what we believe! How COOL is that!!
  10. So far I'm looking into Brown Finley I figured I'd go as far as I could there before following the maternal names. So far I've been able to get to the early 1900's and found a great uncle who died on the USS Johnston during WW2. Does anyone know how I can learn how he died? Some died on the ship, some on rafts of battle injury but most of those who died were alive in the water but disappeared.
  11. This show makes me wonder about my own heritage. I've been told we are Irish/German and that I had a great great great grandma that was Cherokee. I then learned that quiet often people think they have Native American roots but they really have a Jewish back ground. Given the "German" part of my ancestry, I have to wonder. I think either one would be cool.
  12. We spend less than the thrifty plan for a husband and wife for our whole family. Of course, we can't afford meat, that would probably put us at low cost.
  13. Look up... repelling biting gnats (??)... When I was looking around there were a few different things about protecting horses. Looks like gnats hate mint. I plan to buy a bottle of extract and add some to my currant solution and see how it does.
  14. We had those in Indiana. We (read everyone in my family but me. Guess I'm a prude) called them (ahem) pecker gnats because they always hung around the dogs "sensitive bits". I don't recall them biting either.
  15. We make our bug spray out of water, lemon juice and vanilla. I keep meaning to look into something to add that keeps off biting gnats to add to it. They are as bad as the mosquitoes here!
