  1. We're in the down hill stretch leading in to our crazy summer. If you don't see me much until sometime in July that's why. Getting ready to head to town. People are going to think I'm crazy when I pick up 3 weeks worth of pudding, mashed potatoes and as many cans of Nido Kinder as I can find to finish the boys meals. I'm down to about 2 weeks to get the meals packed for their Applachian Trail hike (I'm about 1/3 done. We keep eating the ingredients so I have to keep dehydrating), dd and myself packed for our trip to DC for the Girl scout anniversary, ds's Boy Scout Camp, dd's Girl Scout Camp and hopefully a couple of reunions thrown in - one dh's family and one college family. Just realized last night, I need dh to pack a bag separate from his backpack so he'll have clothes for after I pick them up that haven't been on the trail for 2+ weeks. :yuk: Say a prayer I don't go :cheeky-smiley-067: before it's over.

  2. If you get an antenna and live within 20 or so miles of the tv station, you might be able to pick it up. I had gotten a digital antenna to try and get rid of satellite, but I live just far enough that it didn't work well. Our internet doesn't work well sometimes either so going down to just Internet tv didn't work either.

  3. You can get a USB to Micro adapter if it the keyboard doesn't come with one. I haven't used one, but I've looked at them. Let me do a little more checking on this one. I've looked at keyboards that came up in a search for a keybord for kindle fire, but I didn't go much further. I haven't found a definitve answer on if they actually work with the fire, but there are adapters to make the usb fit.

The other thing I was going to tell you is when I use the Fire, I turn it upside down with screen rotation on. I found if I don't turn it upside down, I tend to hit the off button at the bottom. I usually lock it as well, especially if I'm laying down. I don't like the screen rotating if I change posistions. Luckily the skin I bought for it looks the same upside down as it does right side up.

  4. I forgot to add to the above, if anyone is looking at buying an ipod check out the Samsung Galaxy players. The 5" one has a screen (larger than an entire ipod) and is only $40 more than the 8g ipod and has expandable memory and can play flash. They just came out with new ones. I think there's one about the same size as the ipod, which IS much more pocket friendly. If dd had gotten hers before I got the fire, I might not have gotten the fire. It's nearly as big and can do most of her school work that's on the pc on her player, plus has access to kindle and nook books. I don't look for free books there very much, even though I can get them on my phone because to me the selection isn't as good and I have a harder time finding them.

If you want to personalize your kindles or almost any device check out http://www.decalgirl.com/. They have 100's of designs to choose from. They are removable and last. DS has had some on one of his devices for years. It is one he doesn't play as much anymore, but they are still stuck and look just as good as when he put them on.

I got a Klear Kase for the Fire. It is waterproof and provides protection from falls. Since it's clear, the decals show through as well. It was kind of pricey, but worth the protection with dd using it - she was really hard on electronics until this past 6 months or so.

  5. @ Jeepers - Aww shucks  Thanks Jeepers.

@ Mt_Rider - no ipods don't have sd cards. I think they did that to make you spend more money to buy the larger storage capacity. They cost about the same to make, but they jack the price up for the higher storage ones. If you change your email address, just use the one you signed up with to sign in with Amazon. You can change it in the my account section.

@ Arby - could you use the gift card toward the food saver? You can get a usb keyboard to type directly to your Fire. You could use Google Documents for free and have access from just about any device. I have had trouble with format staying the same if I transfer it to an office program, but I think they fixed it. I haven't used it too much since I lost my job at the school a couple of years ago. There's also a quick office app. I've got the free one to read docs, but I think the paid version might let you create them. Yes it does rotate so you can read in landscape mode instead of vertical. If you pull down the little gray bar at the top, you can turn on and off the screen rotation.

  6. UGH. Wonder if that has anything to do with your itching? It would be nice if that was behind it all.

I remember being disgusted when I ran my hand under the rubber flange thing that goes around top of the inside of the washer. Most of it was dried on fabric softener, before I switched to dryer sheets. :0327:

Makes me wonder if my next washer should be a front loader without an agitator?

The rubber around the door gets just as nasty. It's easier to see and clean though.

Reading this reminds me I need to run dishwasher detergent through mine again. I had started doing this a few years ago. I add the dishwasher detergent and let it run on hot. I think the orginal instructions said you could add extra bleach because it's in the dishwasher stuff anyway. I have to find the exact directions for that part. I usually just add the detergent.

  7. They will never completely disappear unless amazon does or you delete them from your amazon account through the website. When you delete them from your device they are archieved at amazon. You aren't limited to one device either. You can put them on as many devices as are linked to your account. You can loan them to friends 1 time total I believe as well.

I haven't researched the cloud thing too much. I think it lets you read them from internet without downloading it to a device or app. I wasn't too interested since most of my books are already downloaded on at least one device.

Until I started downloading reference books and 100 yr old world and American history books for dd next year to get a better history imo up until the early 1900's I stayed at around 50% on having read what I get.

I skim at least the first part of most the reference and cookbooks. I'm a fast reader (not speed reader though) and can get through several during a tv show that way. A typical paperback takes me less than a day if I'm interested and have the time or stay up late.

Mt_RIder - 8g isn't really 8g after you figure in system requirements. If you don't have apps or music I'd say conservatively you could store at least 5-6000. I read somewhere that devices might slow down after 2000.

I know on the regular kindle you can make folders. I haven't been able to figure it out on the fire or phone. Since the kids have devices now, I haven't tried to make folders on the pc. I just wish you could make folders in the archieve so I didn't have to remember the name or scroll through all of them to find the book I'm looking for there.

I've wondered too if amazon would put a limit on the number you can obtain free or archieve in the future.

  8. Ereaders can handle 1000's of books. I googled it because I wasn't sure the exact number. I found out you can move books from kindle to your pc/flash drive attached to the pc when the kindle is connected to it. There seems to be an estimate of 1mb/book which makes ABOUT 1000/GB! Specs say about 3500 books on a kindle. Nooks only hold about 1500 BUT has an slot for memory cards. The more memory you have the more you can store. If you delete a book off of your device, it is archieved at Amazon (I assume Nook is the same way) and you can download it at anytime. Audio books take more room and you can't store as many of them.

  9. How about the old ice trays, where the divider had the lever you pull up to separate the icecubes? Anyone still have those?

They certainly lasted and were more stable than the plastic ones!

Have them and Lori Still uses them!

The cat will come a running when she hears that 'crack' because she knows there are always little chips that mom will give her to eat.

Yes that is also the cat that we have to go outside in the winter and get her bowl full of snow so she can eat it. And if it starts to snow in the middle of the night , she will come to bed, wakes me up and then race downstairs to sit by the 'snow bowl'.

There's still some in my grandmother's things I think. Amazon, and some other stores still sell them, although I doubt their made as well as they used to be. Vermont Trading Co sells them as well. They're one of my favorite window shopping websites. Tney have a lot of the old tyme stuff. http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/store/jump/productDetail/Kitchen/Aluminum_Ice_Trays_-Set_of_2_Trays-/H2041?searchid=7SMCGGFD&feedid=googleproductsearch&jt=1&js=100&jsid=21345&jcp=Google%20Product%20Search&utm_source=Google%2BProduct%2BSearch&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%2BProduct%2BSearch&gdftrk=gdfV21961_a_7c336_a_7c4822_a_7cH2041_d_39701

  10. Ooops! Bad wording. He took it before school. I don't think he would have a way to make it at school.

I really wonder what schools think sometimes and why they can't admit when they are wrong or make allowances when they are obviuosly needed. I just read a story about a boy that failed because he missed 16 days to take care of him mom taking chemo.

At Boy Scouts they often add flavoring to their water, so that won't be a big deal.

I looked at our local Chinese store and I think they had everything but the ginger tea. I'm going to go back and look in case they were out of it.

To make ginger ale, I'm going to add sparkling water. I'm not sure how it would be mixed ginger ale. Some are so weak though, it might just make it sweeter.

  11. In looking for things for the boys hike this summer, I ordered some honey ginger powder thinking it would be honey flavored with a touch of ginger. It turned out to be a ginger tea with honey and sugar as a sweetener. My sinuses were hurting one day to the point of making me sick to my stomach so I decided to drink some. Within a little while, my sinuses were better. I figured it was the med I had taken finally kicked in. A couple of days later, the Herbal Anitbiotic book by Stephen Harrod Buhner I ordered came in. The section on ginger said it was almost as good of a cough medicine as codeine and a very effective antihistamine and expectorant.

I've tried it a couple of times and it's worked for myself and ds. This past weekend we went hiking, and I found out I'm allergic to cotton wood as is ds. We came home and I took the usual Benydryl along with some herbal nasal spray after rinsing my sinuses and still felt miserable after a couple of hours and a nap. I remembered the ginger tea and with in an hour was as fine as could be. DS was coughing all last week from allergies, and I couldn't get it to go away, until I remembered the tea. He got up with a little coughing this am, but I gave him the tea and he left cough free.

The tea I have is http://www.amazon.com/Instant-Ginger-Honey-Crystals-Pack/dp/B002SWB73C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1334581160&sr=8-2. It's good hot or cold and seems to work either way.A word of warning, it does have a bit of a bite until you get used to it. I think later today, I might make some ginger ale with it by dissolving it in a little water first and then adding sparkling water. It's definitely going in to the boys backpacks in place of allergy and cough meds. It's much lighter and works. I can also put it in ds's first aid kit for Boy Scout since it's not a drug.

I'm definitely going to stock up on the instant tea, but I'm also going to find somewhere to plant some edible ginger that the dogs won't have a territory dispute over it.

  12. Look on Homeschool Buyers Co-op http://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/index.php?option=com_quickbase&Itemid=1141&c=1 The link should take you to the foreign language page. They've got Rosetta for 20% off and another program for 50% off as well as a few others. I don't know anything about the programs but have loved the othet subjects I've ordered from them. You can link to the product website from theirs. There's usually some reviews and sometimes a trial of as long as a month. They've saved me a ton of money since I found dd learns better from computer programs for a lot of things. They have all subjects and some are in traditional format.

  13. The little propane camp stoves can be hooked up to a bigger tank. You just have to buy a connector hose. The Boy Scouts cook that way becaus they can't use Coleman fuel and the little tanks run out quickly.

What about using the burner on the side of a gas grill? Most of them have an adjustable flame.
