  1. Thanks for the reply,Just Mee! When we had silkie roosters, it took a very long time before we figured out that they were male. You are right, with this breed, it takes age and a rooster crow before you know for sure! Okay, let me simply convey that these chicks are going are going to be interesting birds, to say the least. Mama is a black silkie and papa is a Golden laced old English Banty. The silkie's temperament is extremely mild mannered while the Old English Banty rooster is nothing but trouble.

    seldiesgirl!!!!

Yes, inquiring minds wanna know....How are ya, Girl?
  5. Does anyone know how to tell the sex of chicks? Our silky banty hatched 8 chicks a week ago. My DD is elated...I am not so excited! I'm thinking that with winter is coming... our coop won't hold 8 more with the 5 we already have. I would love having a few more hens but not too keen on the rooster business. One lil' devil is way more than enough!

  8. In defense of this diet or way of eating as I choose to call it....One can eat whole grains and fruits as healthy carbs. Being on the Atkins diet, you elimate white flours, starchy vegetables, sugar and processed foods...basically all the foods that nutritionally do your body no good! Atkins may not be for all, but it does help many to achieve good health. I have been doing this way of life since May and have lost over 30 pounds and have never been more healthier! I have thyroid disease and this diet combined with the meds I take daily has benefitted me greatly. Where I once ate bagels and donuts, I am now eating lean protein and a variety of fresh vegetables. Many I know have lost over 100 pounds and years later are still maintaining this weightloss and sustaining a healthy way of life. The following link has many facts and results of low-carb living: http://forum.lowcarber.org/

    ONE DAY FOR SUGAR

I do like the concept of 6 days on and one off. The first few days without sugar are the most difficult depending on the severity of your sugar addiction. When one abstains from sugar for a length of time and then indulges, you will become physically ill. Sugar is a drug like none other. I can attest to the wonderful benefits of abstaining from sugar! I have been sugar-free for over 3 months! I have lost a considerable amount of weight (which was the motivating factor for this change in diet) I am more energetic than I have been in years. And for the first time in my entire adult life, I eat to live, not live to eat!
  15. WE have always had hens and they are so mild and sweet natured. We always keep anywhere from 5-8 chickens who get along perfectly. That is until "Nugget" joined our flock. He is an agressive 1 year old Golden Laced Old English Banty rooster: http://www.ccountry.net/~rooster/btgloe.htm with the same tendencies to attack. "Nugget" has attacked children and friends and now he is going after our golden retriever. Our problem is that he is a gorgeous bird and very easy to work with. My DD shows this rooster as a 4-H show chicken and last week at our county fair she won a Grand Showmanship Trophy with him and a gold state ribbon to compete in the Michigan State Fair next year. While "Nugget" is beautiful to look at, he is a major pain...I won't go near him without a broom! We have resorted that we will give him more time and hopefully he will become less territorial. We have clipped his spurs, to lesson the damage of his attacks. The only advise we recieved from the poultry experts was to get one or two more larger roosters to keep "Nugget" in line and personally I think for us, it will create more trouble.
  16. Happy Birthday, dear friend...You go, Girl!
