Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa) Dried Leaf

View Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa) Dried Leaf in more detail >>

The Hopi smoked the resin, or sap obtained from the Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa) plant. The flower would be cut off and the sap that ran from the stem would be collected. Each day, for a few weeks, another tiny bit was cut from the stem and more sap collected. This sap was then air-dried and later smoked in ritual. The Hopi believe that induced dream states contain more information about reality than the conscious waking state. Wild lettuce, aka lettuce opium, is said to enhance the vividness of dreams when smoked prior to sleep.

That is really interesting about the dried stuff, but the 'tea' I am refering to uses garden lettuce. It is an Amish book, (I'd have to find it for the exact recipe), but it says to boil so much lettuce in so much water, strain lettuce out and simmer liquid to reduce to so much. Drink as a tea. I remember thinking 'YUCK', but I have panic attacks and hate any and all of the meds they've ever given me for it, so I was thinking that if it ever got too bad for an extended period of time, that I might actually try this. Right now I take high doses of B-Complex vitamins-working pretty good so far.

Necie, my oldest had bad panic attacks for a few years. We had great success with some of the Bach flower essences and supplementing with inositol and 5HTP. You can get all of these at the natural food stores.

Soooo, ya got me curious, and I Googled "lettuce tea":

(NOTE!! No mention on these sites about it being "wild"... they each seem to be regular lettuce. There are others on "wild lettuce". DON'T ASSUME THESE ARE GOOD REMEDIES... USE CAUTION!!)

A great remedy for sleeplessness.

Lettuce tea: The whole vegetable has a sedative effect helping to calm restlessness and induce sleep. Mint helps to counteract the slight bitterness of the lettuce and make quite a palatable drink.

Recipe: Take 3 to 4 large lettuce leaves, 2 cups of water and sprigs fresh mint. Simmer the lettuce leaves in the water in a covered pan for 10 minutes remove from the heat and add the mint leave for a further 5 minutes. Strain and drink before retiring.

...Have also made lettuce tea, yes, lettuce! for my children with some results. One cup boiling water poured over one cup grated lettuce, steep for 30 minutes. Drain and drink. Usually works in about 20 minutes. And you might try focusing on each part of your body from feet up to head and forcing them to relax and go limp. You should be asleep by the time you finish.

Lettuce

Cooked lettuce has fantastic relaxant properties, and lettuce tea is known to be a quick-acting sedative.

Mix 1 cup of shreaded lettuce with 1 cup of boiling water and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Strain the mixture and drink it before going to bed.

Some people claim this to be the most effective natural insomnia treatment known as well as one of the best relaxants.

Sounds like the wild lettuce is pretty strong & possibly dangerous stuff (picked up while just skimming).
