canning with rubber rings

Recommended Posts

Which jars with rubber rings would be safe to can in now. i have some with the glass disks they used to use. I also have some that have larger lids with bails. (not the antique kind) i was thinking i could start collecting some of the correct kind if I knew what I was looking for.

How are these different types of jars used.

i looked around on the internet and didn't find anything of much value for instructions.

Found some old metal clips that they used to use. Any info on this appreciated.

The only way that I currently use a rubber ring, is if I place something in a jar with a blemish on the top (where the seal usually sets) then I will use a rubber ring which sits down on the lip where the rim sits and seal it that way...I then use it first when I get to that years crops. It may be a good idea if you plan on using them post SHTF to try them now, while you can still find replacements. We used to can using them and zinc lids on regular jars, but too much hassle if you ask me.

Veggie, I hafta say, I've never canned using the rubber rings...I've only used the metal rings with the metal lids with rubber edges.

Perhaps someone else has some experience with this!
