YYY
Hi Everybody, I vacuum sealed a bunch of stuff in jars today and mostly things went smoothly. I tried to vac seal 4 quart jars of the little artificial sweetener packets. I really jammed them into the jars, so I guess you can say the contents were very dense. One quart jar had a square-ish shape and the other 3 were round. The one square-ish jar sealed with no problem. However, the round ones simply would not. I tried all the tips and tricks that I have read about, but still no luck. Since the square-ish jar sealed, I transferred the sweetener to square jars. Success for all 3 on the 1st try!!! I even used the same lids !!! An added bonus was that I was able to cram more packets into the square jars. For the other stuff that I vacuum sealed, approximately half the jars were round and half were square. I guess because these jars had “dense” contents, the shape made the difference. Outlandish, I know. Makes no sense, but there you have it. So if you’re having trouble sealing, try changing the shape of the jar. I hope this helps someone. YYY Link to comment
rootdiggr
Were the round jars canning jars or mayo jars? I cannot get the mayo jars to vacuum seal, but they are fine in the water bath canner! Just one of the random acts of frustration in life. Link to comment
YYY
Hi Root Diggr, I checked and it turns out that the jars are not canning jars. They’re not mayonnaise jars either. I don’t know what they are. Thanks for clearing up the mystery. YYY Link to comment
Violet
It is because mayo jars have a thinner lip on them, plus, they are slightly rounded. A regular canning jar has a wider sealing surface and is flat. Link to comment
