When I look at the thread replies, I sometimes see a number in red like (1). What the heck does that mean? It's driving me crazy that I don't understand.

it's telling you the number of replies to that particular thread or other threads in that forum since the last time you were there. So you can see if a topic has activity that you haven't seen/read yet.

 

You can also go into the Active Topics in the menu bar above and see what's been posted lately from between 24 hours and 7 days.
