The Cancer Dance

In the header I said this is a war story, after reading it you will come to understand as I did that all wars are not fought on battle fields with guns and bombs, some are quieter but if anything, more painful. but it's also a love story! and that's a good thing.

I've read this in it's rough form and even tho I'm living a small part of this story reading it hit me like a runaway truck, it left me sad, glad, but most of all ...hopeful and yes even a little prayerful which for me is a big jump.

After having spent the last 90 days of Sandy's life, watching cancer killing a person I loved very much I was left with a dark something inside me, but my many friends helped pull me thru it, and Sheri's book has brought me to a more fulfilling closure, if such is possible, it also gave me hope in that just hearing the cancer word is no reason to just give up and let it come.

This is a true story about a woman who refuses to give up, refuses to allow the word can't into her life, and it's also a love story.

I highly recommend it to everybody , even if your one of the lucky ones that has not had cancer come visit your family.. my first order is for my Mother who will be 90 Sept 15th and is healthy as a horse, but who has many friends who either have cancer or have already died from it.

Not a shameless plug at all. Glad you posted and let us know. I jumped right on reading the 15 page preview. Can't wait to read the entire book!!! Ordering it today.

On side note, knowing how important the furry friends are to everyone here, ran across this story earlier I was going to post this morning! About one special dog and the cancer dance. Another "love story" and one of encouragement I hope. Enjoy!

Lucky Dog

Anyone who has pets will really like this. You'll like it even if you don't and you may even decide you need one!

Mary and her husband Jim had a dog named 'Lucky.' Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably, someone would forget and something would come up missing. lucky2.jpg

Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's other favorite toys Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box.

It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease....in fact; she was just sure it was fatal. She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders. The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her...what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary's dog through and through. If I die, Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand that I didn't want to leave him! The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death. The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the little dog just drooped, whining and miserable. Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed. lucky3.jpg

When Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong. She couldn't move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. But panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life. He had covered her with his love.

Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every day. It's been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky...he still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure.

Remember....live every day to the fullest. Each minute is a blessing from God. And never forget....the people who make a difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care for us. If you see someone without a smile today give them one of yours!

Live simply.

Love seriously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Leave the rest to God.

Granny, I'm happy to say that Lunamother's book has sold several copies so far today, God knows each and every one sold is met with her heartfelt thanks and love, this has been such a long hard fight but she has never stepped back from it, and I've seen her strength and her will power. If these alone were bullets this war would be long over and the enemy dead and buried.

I've learned a lot about love and caring from her, she's truly a force to be dealt with.

yer just tryin' to get me to bake you a pie, aren't you? :tapfoot:

Seriously- this is something I've always wanted to do when I grew up, and since I'm FIFTY now, I guess I'd better get after it, huh?

I've got the best Fan Club O' Three here rallied together to take alot of the chores offa me so I can concentrate on this- without my Boys, I'd never be able to do it. :)

I just got my first 'real' copy of this- 9 days after submitting it via the magic of the interwebs- and it's REALLY nice

I'm so pleased with how it turned out- it looks every bit as good as something you'd get at a bookstore and lots better than the ones in the supermarket aisles.

It was so exciting to open up the box- almost like being handed one of my babies for the first time :)

Luna - congratulations! I'm so glad you could write about your experience. It's on my list of things to order.

Granny - You need a tissue alert at the top of the story. Darn it, this is the 3rd time I've cleaned my glasses today. :yar:

Where would we be without good friends who are like family? I think I'd be very lonely.
