Choosing Grocery Store Produce for Home Preservation

Recommended Posts

Don't worry if you don't have a garden to harvest produce for preserving. You can buy produce at the big box grocery, the neighborhood store, or the farmer's market for that purpose. But how do you know if you're getting food that is ripe and ready for preserving???

Share your hints and tips here for determining whether or not purchased produce is worth the price.

How to pick a ripe watermelon.

Quote

How to pick a watermelon: Every day I see people banging on watermelons trying to pick the best one. Here's the real deal on picking the sweetest watermelon: 1. Make sure it has a prominent yellow spot. This is where it sat on the ground ripening. No spot = premature pick = not ripe. 2. Look for "webbing". This is the brown, coarse web - looking material. This is caused when bees pollinate the flower and scar the membranes that later form the fruit. The more pollination = more webbing = sweeter fruit. 3. Look for black, hard globs seeping out. This is sugar, not insects or rotting.

May be an image of fruit and text that says 'Don'tworryBeHealthy Don Don'tworry Be Healthy'
