Purdy Bear
Iv seen in one book that you can dehydrate food in an oven with its door open, is that the same as on this forum. I dont know anything about the subject at all. So what is it, and how do you do it PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEE! Link to comment
vigilant20
You can. I think it's safer and more energy efficient to use a machine made for dehydrating food though. For many things like herbs you could also hang in a shady well ventilated area to air dry. A book I hear highly recommended for learning about dehydrating is "Mary Bells Complete Dehydrator book". I borrowed Garden Ways Guide to Dehydrating from the library which is what I've been working off of. You can also check out the videos on youtube by dehydrate2store...she has a lot of good tips and information. Link to comment
Cat
Yup, we can help with that!! Dehydrating food is simply drying out the water content so that it can be safely stored. Some foods you can eat dried, but some really need water to make them useable (called REhydrating). Some foods can't be dehydrated safely. Yes, an oven can be used, but it's generally not something you can just leave and let "work" on it's own, like you can with a dehydrator (usually). It's not quite as "automatic". And there are home-made dehydrators that you can work with, if you don't have money to buy a commercial one. I have a lot to do today, but if you take a look at these links, you'll see some of what we have discussed over the years. Later tonight I can explain further or provide more links.
