I believe the significance of the opening is that one can come in and go out. I have often seen the same idea on hand woven rugs. A tiny white thread will pass somewhere through the border design into the main design of the rug. The meaning is the same. One can pass in and out of the tribal land. Link to comment
Skagitgal Posted May 20, 2009 Share Posted May 20, 2009 Hey, thanks for the information. The symbolism is interesting to me, 'cause I lived on tribal land for many years.....way back when. We lived in Hell's canyon. It was full of rock paintings, campgrounds of the ancients, very very early gathering places. The beach below the cabin was a fishing & arrow head making spot. High water used to expose all sorts of finds. My most amazing find was a pink quartz arrowhead 1 1/2" long in perfect condition.
