Not canning due to having 'lost' my canner, I froze 10 lbs of raw and cooked beef, 1 qt. Of strawberries.
What happened??? This is a moment of silence thing!

Well not canning yet, but cooking down so that I can. Got 30 lbs of tomatoes yesterday for spaghetti sauce and they're now simmering on the stove top. House smells like an Italian restaurant.
In doing this I discovered that my Victorio Strainer is extremely cantankerous. Took three tries to get everything together just right so that it would work properly. Also discovered I don't have a pot big enough to handle 30 lbs of tomatoes. (Water bath canner is old and has some rust spots so I didn't want to use it for the cooking portion.)
AW! FYI- Walmart has 18qt roaster ovens for around $25, if not now, come "Black Fri" season. I LOVELOVELOVE mine for big batch cooking/canning. It's about time to retire mine, & i've only had it a few years. I use it a LOT, though. Broth, maters, beans, roasting (of course), dog food, chicken grains & so many more things. It's not the electric part, I've plum wore out the enamel.

I love my ducks. We got 3, because one of the kids wanted ONE. Well, flock animals, right? We ended up with the perfect trio. Then we got 8 more earlier this year. They are so funny to watch.
None of mine have a pool. Ducks don't need or KNOW they need a body of water unless you teach them that. They just need enough water to dunk their bills in

I've read you can freeze dry in your freezer, though I'm sure it would take considerably longer.

WOW! Really? The ONLY reason they're looking at this is because of the uprorar.

Mmmm, MtR, try a recipe for taco de lengua if you haven't. So amazingly good!

I have been keeping my birds in plain but fenced off view of my oldest hens for a couple weeks or more, so they can get accustomed to each other but not hurt each other. I have so far added 8 ducks & a flock (that's the word I was thinking of above, LOL) of 13 new layers/cockerels this year with no problems.
-
Any new bird needs to be big enough, &/or in a large enough herd/pack to defend itself. I also learned the hard way years ago. I would keep them in the separation area until they are feathered out. We just let ours into gen pop, & they were 3 months or close to it when we did.

AND, thanks, John ;0

Tsk tsk, Gerber. You're making this habit.

Momma is definitely a RIR. I love little baby chickies! Congrats! RIR rarely go broody so bigger congrats!
Awesome. Wow, I did not know that.
The weather has been wet the past 2 days. The first day, a big thunderstorm passed through overnight, yellows and reds on the radar. She had settled down on the ground with the chicks. I was afraid they would have been washed out if it rained too much. Our back yard turns into a stream then a pool, when it rains real hard. I captured the babies and momma and put them up in the box. She was not too happy with me, but I did not want to loose them to the cold or rain.
The babies finally followed her up into the nesting box yesterday evening.
As much as I am trying to convince myself, "they are food!" Fried is becoming very friendly, she lets me pet her, loves to take weeds out of my hand, and lays down when I pet her, while I change out their food and water. DH says Fried is too old to eat and to keep her as a pet. So much for "food."
If one of the chicks is a rooster, we will put it with Fried for a while and see if she decides to brood too. She seems a little jealous that Fricasseed has babies. Who knows?
RIR's are one of my fave breeds
