  1. DD and I are filling the dehydrator with cherry romas, Principe Bourghese, and Sungold cherry tomatoes. I have to Thai Pink Egg tomatoes to can, hopefully. They are dark pink, plum-sized and more tart that usual tomatoes. Okra to fix, zucchini and yellow squash to try in Mom's George Foreman grill. A friend made some and DH said it was really good. He doesn't even like summer squash so I'm eager to try that and some eggplant.

  2. Thank you! We did get about 6 gallons before it got too hot. They have more and if the bears don't get them, we'd like to go back. Lots of green ones still too. They are leaving for a 10 day vacation in Costa Rica with their DD, DSIL and DGS. SIL is from there.

  3. It's been hotter than normal here too. It's been in the mid-upper 80s in the shade. Our thermometer that's in the sun isn't working. It keeps blinking 57 degrees. I guess it needs a battery. It's an indoor-outdoor type.

DH and I are leaving in a few minutes to go to a friend's place to pick blueberries. It's about 20 miles. They said we could pick them without cost so we're grateful. We hope to get 5 or 6 gallons before it gets too hot.

Hope everyone has a good day!

  4. This post refers to the free medical/dental clinic that happened in Beckley, WV July 13-15 that I posted about earlier to encourage folks to come if they lived nearby.

DH, DD1 and I just got home from Pathway Beckley last night about 10 pm, after nine days in WV. What an awesome experience. DD and I worked in Central Supply and DH ended up in Venue Services so we didn't have much direct contact with patients. Long hours every day. One night we got back to the friends' where we were staying at 11 pm only to have to get up at 2:30 am and go back to the Convention Center. Here are some stats of the event.

734 volunteers (one lady drove from Mexico to volunteer, one flew from Bermuda)

    1722 patients seen (Wed-Fri afternoon)

Services offered-podiatry, dental, primary care, surgery, radiology, lab services, vision care (including glasses), hydrotherapy, massage, barber/beauty salon, mental health, lifestyle counseling, chaplaincy, women's health, pharmacy.

    Value of services- $6,543,660.00
    Value of medicines- $50,000

    How people found out-

The next several Pathway to Health events will be on the East Coast. They are researching several cities now and will decide before spring.

  5. Well, today I am baking gluten-free breads and getting other stuff done for our trip to Beckley, WV for the Pathway to Health event. DH and DS got the air conditioner working on the car, fixed the trunk latch and replaced the emergency brake handle with one from a junk yard this week. I have a long list of stuff I have to do before we leave Sunday afternoon.

Froze 6 qts of sugar peas and 1 qt of blueberries yesterday.

  6. I really would like to know how they get the card numbers. I have a card that is used only for online purchases & no money is left in that account. It is rare that we use our cards for anything.

    .

I would too! This debit card is only used for online purchases. The assistant treasurer has one that is only used for in store purchases. It was the online on that was hacked.

  7. That is so frustrating!

I am a church treasurer and our church debit card was hacked in May. When I went online to do something, the church account showed over $1300.00 of purchases at Sony PlayStation. I immediately canceled the card and called this company. They said they couldn't do anything without my Sony PlayStation account number! I told them I didn't have an account. So I called the bank fraud department and they said we would get the money back while they investigated.

  8. Jeepers, can the left overs. Lol.

DH insisted I order a pressure canner. Ack! Mom always WB everything. He said things are going to get worse. No relief in site. So, we got an AA, the 2014 Blue Ball Canning book and a Hanes repair book for the little car we bought. 95 and it gets 35 mpg.

Now, I'm going to be researching info and asking a lot of questions. That'll teach me, for not canning anything other than WB and jams/jellies.

I was terrified the first time I used a pressure canner. DH borrowed his mom's, helped me get whatever we were canning ready and in the jars, then in the canner. Then he went to split wood and never thought to tell me that it would start steaming and I had to time it for 10 minutes before putting the weight on. I didn't even know there was a weight to put on. Before too long the steam started spewing out that little "spout" and I ran outside screaming that it was going to blow up! DH ran into the house, saw what was happening and had a good laugh as he set the timer and explained that I needed to put the weight on when the timer beeped.

Read the book carefully and ask about anything you don't understand. You will come to love it!

  9. DD1 signed up for Community Service to help the flood victims. She'll be traveling up and staying with us. We might leave Sunday afternoon because they have seven semi-trailer loads of supplies and equipment to unload, sort and set up before Wednesday. We would like to help with that too.

888-447-2849 is the phone number if anyone wants to call and get more information about being a patient.

  10. Some of you may remember that we always buy a couple of bins (18-20 bushels each), then sell some and can around 17 bushels ourselves. Well, the orchard owner called me and said that ALL their peaches, nectarines and Asian pears were killed by a freeze this spring :( He said they had a decent crop of golden delicious apples which is good!

  11. DH and I decided to go to Beckley as volunteers! I'm excited abut it. A friend invited us to stay at her house for the 6 days/5 nights. She's about 30 minutes from Beckley. Two of DH's uncles and their wives are going. We have to be there at 10 an July 12 for instructions and will stay for the class on July 17 on sponsoring such an event locally. Now I need to make my to-do and packing lists! :)
