  1. I just didn't think one out CGA. And I came from peanut growing country! We grew the biggest jumbo peanuts you ever saw in our county. So good! We always boiled ours soon after we pulled them up and picked them off the vine. I don't remember ever seeing anyone put them in jars, everyone put them in the freezer. I do remember my grandma laying them out to dry for parched peanuts. The ones at the market were already dried. You would probably never get them to boil soft.

  2. I found Velveeta Cheese on sale for 2.99 for a 2 lb. box! I was wondering if anyone has ever stored this cheese without refrigeration! They sell it right off the shelf in the store and it says on the box to refrigerate AFTER opening. I'm wondering if I could store 4 or 5 boxes in a bucket with a gamma lid? that would probably last me a year.

  3. You can get a free copy of Backwoods Home Magazine on your Kindle today only from Amazon. I tried to post a link, but since I already claimed my copy, the link was showing my personal info and saying I had already bought the book. Maybe you can find it on facebook or through Amazon.

  4. Our local Piggley Wiggley / Food Giant has an unusually good sale this week. 'Case Pack' and 'Gimme $5' sale. Red Gold Brand 'Rotel Type' Tomatoes are .29 a can. I bought 2 cases of these last year, and they are as good as reg Rotels. 50 lbs russet potatoes for 9.99, 6 lb. of navy, great northern or pintos for 7.88 (Sam's has a better price on pintos) Best Choice Mac& Cheese for 9.88 (24 box case) Iron Kids bread .99, and lots of other good buys. My link Not sure if that link will work, but it is www.foodgiant.com. They have stores in MS, AL, GA, TN, MO, KY, AR, and FL.

  5. Good to know WormGuy! I kinda have a fear of stored food ruining and my money being wasted. It keeps me from prepping like I really want to. I need to work on overcoming that feeling. I feel comfortable canning all that I can in jars, because I have been doing that all my life. But buying food to put up in buckets makes me nervous. Isn't that silly?

  6. Thanks for the input Deerslayer. I googled 'buy dehydrated hash-browns' to try to compare prices before I stocked up on them, and apparently a lot of people like them. A few were complaining that their stores no longer carried them. I hope your store was just out of them. They seem to be a good price, so I will definitely go back and stock up soon. I think the bucket will work fine for storage.

  7. I was making the Chicken Enchilada Casserole yesterday and ds came through and said that he wanted fried chicken. So I fried the fresh chicken and opened a quart of my home canned chicken for the casserole. They cleaned the casserole dish and I had leftover fried chicken! lol I think I'll try Salisbury Steak in the crock pot next! post-7458-011789300 1349146518_thumb.jpg

  8. Has anyone else bought these dehydrated hash-browns from Sam's? I have picked up a box the last 2 times I shopped there. I have used them for a casserole and just plain hash-browns, and my family loves them! $5.95 for this 33 oz. box (fills a gallon jar with a little left over). Is this a good price? I got a new Emergency Essentials catalog today and theirs was $9.95 for a 31 oz. can. I haven't checked anywhere else. Would they store well in the box or should I use mylar and bucket? post-7458-009588600 1349142592_thumb.jpg

  9. DH took me back to Fred's and got 4 boxes of jelly jars for $4 each and 4 boxes of Sure-Jell for 1.90 each. I bought a quart bag of bulk fruit pectin for $2 from an Amish store when we went to Indiana last year. Now that dd has moved back home, I don't have a reason to go there now. I guess I need to check out prices and order some. ScrubbieLady, the wide mouth jars are Ball, and the reg. were Golden Harvest. Dee, Fred's is a Dollar Store. Maybe it's just a southern chain? They have the best prices on jars all year long. Mostly Golden Harvest brand and their reg. jar flats are always $1 a dozen. I've never had a problem with them.
