Coughing, she pulls out the 3-in-1 oil and lubes the appropriate places. She cranks the cranks, spins the dials, moves the levers until they are all working smoothly. Turning it on, Cat carefully adjusts the levers and turns the dials to *just* the right spot. A contented hummmm fills the air, the curtain pulls back, and softly, gently, the strains of "Auld Lang Syne" begin...** The soft golden glow of firelight dances on the walls of the cabin. The fire in the fireplace has burned to red-gold embers, with occasional flickers of flame reaching into the air. Candles line the tables, filled with a wonderful selection of homemade delicacies: breads, jams, and fruits canned with care and prepared for us with love. Fresh vegetables surround savory dips, and plates of Wisconsin cheeses of every type are flanked by cold platters filled with cold sliced meats. The seafood platters demand a table of their own, both hot and cold selections, surrounded as they are by sauces and dips. A towering white chocolate-covered cake decorated in delicate flowers dominates the center of the dessert table. Cheesecakes and chocolate desserts fill every inch of the table, with dark rich chocolates sprinkled among the plates and platters. The punchbowl is filled to the brim, and fanciful ice sculptures nestle among the mints, nuts, and candies. Champagne chills, and the cappuchino machine indicates it's ready to serve. Out on the porch, the night breeze stirs the pines and the stars twinkle in the sky, casting a hazy glow onto the fresh snow. The smell of new beginnings is in the air; the fresh, cold cleanliness that carries a sense of wonder and anticipation. As we raise a toast to ed, a single star blazes for an instant across the sky, and then is gone. Happy New Year, my friends... May your blessings be many and your sorrows be few. Since they're "nestle(d) among the mints, nuts, and candies" they must be pretty small......Anybody wanna play Chess?????? A new table of food is what we all need this morning. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, bagles, toast, pancakes, a couple different kinds of muffins. That should be good for a start.
