Yes, the baking soda is to neutralize acid in the water. Don't use it if you are using boric acid of course.

The cod liver oil is very soothing at bedtime and helps the eye to heal.

I'd put 1 tsp of table salt and a pinch of baking soda per liter of distilled water so it doesn't irritate the eye more. Then I would pierce a cod liver oil capsule and squirt that into the eye.

Grows wild here too, right outside my door. Once you locate it, you can gather berries and make a privacy hedge with it.

It does have caffeine as well as some other substances that help with bronchitis. It is very closely related to Yerba Matte. I'd say the caffeine is somewhere between black tea and coffee in strength. You won't get a hard jolt unless you brew it so dark that it isn't pleasant to drink.

To prepare, I pick the green leaves and promptly roast them on the stove in the same cast iron skillet I used for roasting coffee beans. It kind of messes up a skillet so don't use a good one. Roast them till most are just brown, not too dark. Steep the roasted leaves in water just off the boil. I like the flavor as is, but you can add mint too or other flavor herbs.

Fences stayed up, though not for want of testing by the goats or digging by the dogs. They all keep me busy.

Water is draining off ok. Goat shelter was very muddy so I spent a good bit of time and all my energy today, dragging shovelfuls of sand to put in there. Still needs more, but it is better.

I was once asked during a job interview if I were pg and it was just after I miscarried for the second time, so it was more than a little upsetting. He insinuated that I wouldn't be hired if I was pg but didn't come out and flat say it.

I expect polio, along with cholera, diphtheria, typhoid, whooping cough and the other "childhood" diseases will come back in force when the sanitation breaks down in our cities. Clean water for drinking and bathing is imperative to combat these diseases. Diarrheal diseases continue to be a serious problem even with our modern sanitation. I once worked in a pediatric hospital. Part of the time I worked in the isolation unit. I got to where I could diagnose the particular bacteria causing a child to be ill, just by smelling the air in the room with that child. the doctors had to do a culture and sensitivity before they knew what was wrong. The nurses would know right away. The nurses also had to get nosy and find out what the reason was that the child contracted the disease so we could teach the mothers how to care for them. Invariably it was poor sanitation, though some diseases are so very contagious that you don't need a serious lapse in sanitation, some are pretty hard to catch. We saw a lot of the hard to catch ones in MS. Some mothers would fill a bottle for a baby from any source available, even an open pond or creek. Some admitted that the dog would lick the baby bottle and then the baby would suck from it. All sorts of dirty habits.

Once the hooey hits, breast feeding will become even more important as a means to prevent water born illness in infants. Everyone should also have a really good filter system. One that removes viruses is best, I have one of those, but boiling water that has been filtered thru cloth or sand will also work. Can't emphasize hand washing enough!

Even though there is a LOT of flooding in the general area, we didn't flood here at my place. All safe and sound, just wet. Goats aren't happy, ducks and geese are jubilant.

The inactivated virus is still given routinely in the States. Wild virus has not been eradicated in the countries just south of us. However, since most of us no longer use outhouses or defecate outside on the ground, it hasn't been a serious problem here in a number of yrs, even without the vaccine. When I was young, people were just beginning to put septic tanks in. We used outhouses when we were in MS and AL. Grandpa put in flush toilets at one point, but the pipe ran out into the holler. Mom had a tank and leach field put in for that house around 62 or 63.

Then there is "how can you eat something you raised from a BABY?" or the neighbor who looked at my meat hogs and cried "poor things, poor things!" when I said they weren't pets and I was going to eat them. LOL

I love to freak out the squeamish neighbor by butchering chickens on the front porch where he can see me. LOL

I've done it and it lasts a very long time. I have salt in mine so I have to be sure the lid is on tight in this humid environment. It lasts a long time. Do put salt in it as a preservative and use some celery seed when you cook it down for the natural nitrates that help prevent botulism. However, you are boiling it for hours then dehydrating so there is no water left, shouldn't really have a problem with mold or bacteria anyhow.

Look around plumbing, electrical and HVAC entry points. May need some of that plumber's lead to stuff around them. I expect that is how they are getting in here, but I can't get under the house to see.

Caught a wood rat in a bag of oats the other day and dealt with it quickly. We have a lot of those, but outside so far.

This lady used shelf grip liner and batting. I think I would use fabric for an insole plus the batting then sew the shelf grip to the sole. The grip stuff will make the slipper last longer too. Mother used to knit them for us and the yarn on the sole wore out fairly fast.

Time to put down the dog. Next time it could be a child or visitor to the property and you could be sued.
