  1. Lots of snow - they say a "blizzard" warning, but  We have maybe 6 inches where I am, with more possible. Thank goodness we aren't having the horrible winds they said would come. Some, but not horrible. *YET*

So this morning I was out of milk, low on eggs, and needed bread I can make French Toast with. (I prefer using the smoother, non-multi-grain stuff for it.) I took off early and went shopping just before the misty rain started. It turned into light snow.

But knowing they were calling for a "blizzard", and knowing our son often doesn't take things seriously, I decided to take him some supplies, too. His refrigerator has been broken for months, but he doesn't cook and doesn't care that much about it. But if a blizzard hits, the very nearby grocery store might be closed, and his favorite restaurants, too. And maybe he couldn't get to our house if he needed to. :sigh:

I got him some microwaveable soups he likes, snack crackers, and Snapple drinks. I brought in his mail. And I left it all in his house without telling him while he was at work.

After he got home, I asked if he had stopped by the store on the way home to get stuff. No, he had just stopped by Arby's to get a salad. Didn't feel like going to the grocery store. (This from the kid who HATES to shovel out his drive so he can get out of his garage! So get stuff on the way HOME!)

When he found the stuff I left, he was VERY happy and appreciative. :whistling: Silly Momma...

At least I know he won't starve in the cold. ;)

  2. So I thawed it in the refrigerator for 3 days. Glad I wrapped it in an old towel inside a tough plastic bag. There was some blood leakage.

I pulled it out last night to let it come to room temperature overnight.

First thing this morning I cut it in half - no bones. Nice!

I seasoned it and put it in the pre-heated oven in my roaster, uncovered. I baked it for an hour, then I turned the heat up and let it roast for a half hour./ Then I put the lid on it and shut the oven off. When I got back from the store, I checked the temperature. It's fully cooked, by that indication.

I went ahead and started the oven at 250 degrees again, and after it's in another half hour, I'm considering it fully finished. I want to be sure it's really done. It's not drying out, and it looks good.

Glad I have the time at home right now, in poor weather, to work with it. ;)

Should make lots of very good leftovers. :cook:

  3. The only time I've seen anybody mention this website was back in 2012 -

They say sign up and companies send you stuff for free, often (or always???) with free shipping. You choose what you want.

I read the stuff you have to agree to to sign up. Sounds pretty "normal". But if I have somebody else's experience, I'd feel more comfortable trying it.

Anyone? Should I go for it?????

  4. I put this in "Humor Me" because we all know how ridiculous the odds actually are. :girlneener:

Yeah, I bought some. The lottery is my one "vice". (NOT counting chocolate as a vice, OK???? )

It's sitting at 1.4 BILLION dollars at this time. Might go higher by Wednesday; in fact, its pretty positive that it will by the time the drawing happens.

Silly, I know, but I figure I could finally get DH out of his workplace if I hit even some of it. His workplace is getting more & more bizarre. (Odd, doesn't-make-sense "business decisions".)

My state doesn't allow winners to be anonymous, but you can create a legal foundation to hide behind. That's what I would do. And you'd need LOTS and LOTS of legal and financial experts.

    Thoughts? Dreams? Extreme silliness????

  5. I was at my local grocery last week and saw ham's on sale for $1.09 per pound. Nice looking hams and large. I started looking them over until I saw the brand name...Smithfield. They are owned by the a China company. I'm glad I didn't even touch them.

    :wormie2:

    John

So - where do we figure out who's still "home grown" and who isn't? Did we cover this here? I forget. :scratchhead: And I'm racing through tonight 'cause I have a lot to do. :(

  6. So kind of also as a "clutter-clearing", I'm trying to use things from my freezer that really need to be used up.

I make room in the freezer by cooking it, and end up putting some of it back in as cooked, ready-to-reheat leftovers. I also share with our BigDD's family.

So the other day I found a beef roast. A HUGE beef roast that I got on sale for only $1.88 a pound. It was (and still is) completely sealed up to make freezing it safer. I pulled it out today.

The tag says it's a bit over 15 pounds, but I'm not sure what kind of beef roast it is. I'm thawing it in cold water in the sink, still sealed. I don't see any ribs, so I don't think it's a "rib roast". But I guess it could be, with rib bones removed.

I'm not babysitting hardly at all these days, so I'll have time to deal with it. I'm not sure how I'm going to do it, but I'll get it done...

Anybody have any experience or thoughts? I've been googling stuff, but personal experience is best.

  7. I found a good deal on "to use right away" (getting near the date) cube steaks.

And I got all 3 packages, giving us 14 pieces of meat. :o

So I made a family favorite - cube steaks, floured & fried, then baked in a "gravy" made with cream of mushroom soup thinned with milk. I serve it with mashed potatoes. And veggies - this time a salad.

But I know we can't eat all of these steaks at one time, so some must be frozen for later. Usually I just freeze them raw in the package, sealed up.

I wanted to see if I could cut preparation time *next time* by going ahead and flouring and frying them as I do normally, then cooling and then freezing them. So that's what I did.

I'm hoping that I will be able to pull them out, thaw them, then bake them as I usually do in the soup gravy mix. I can't imagine it being a problem. Even if they're "mushier", it won't hurt the dish.

  8. Our DD was surprised we were without power, gofish- they were just fine.

I suspect that most of us out in the country are prepared. Stuff happens out here.

The ones in the city & suburbs are the ones who head to the hotels & motels because they can't do without their comforts. :(
