Genoa
When canning, I have always brought the lids AND rings to a simmer to make sure they are sterile before putting them on my jars. However, today I got to wondering---do the rest of you sterilize both, or do you just sterilize the lids, without the rings? I never even considered doing it any other way, but for some reason today I started wondering if it was really necessary to sterilize the rings. Link to comment
Jewlzm
I sterilize both. But I do know people who only do the lids. It is apparently a preference thing. Link to comment
Darlene
I steralize both together. Bring your water to a simmer and then turn off. It will steralize them and keep them steralized without excessive boiling, which will remove the protective coating on the rings, and potentially damage the rubber seals. Link to comment
HSmom
I think part of the purpose (besides sterilization) is to have them hot. Hot rings will sit differently than cool ones. Link to comment
Genoa
Thanks ... I'll just keep doing what I've been doing and heat both. Link to comment
