ricardo
I need help seasoning a cast iron skillet. I read the direction on that came with the pan but after I put it in the oven it started to smoke not alot but enough to make the whole house smell like smoke. I lightly coated the pan with melted shortening and I put a cookie sheet under the pan in case the oil dripped. What did I do wrong? Quote Link to comment
Guest Guest
You did the right thing. They do smoke. I try to do new cast iron pans when I can have the windows open as well as using the fan above the stove. They are supposed to be cleaned without soap so the seasoning is not scrubbed off, but I still use some detergent most of the time. So I reseason it by heating a tablespoon of oil in it, then wiping it out to keep it oiled. Sometimes I go ahead and reheat it in the oven after oiling. Lodge makes cast iron cookwear and they have an excellent, easy-to-understand set of FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions). http://www.lodgemfg.com/useandcare.asp Quote Link to comment

Guest Guest
Smoking is normal. I scrub my pans out with what ever it needs...depending on who cooked in it last! after rinsing, place it on the stove, turn the stove on low, throw some oil in it, and wipe it out with a paper towel. I do this after each washing. Quote Link to comment
