  1. Stay away from Windows as far as I am concerned. In particular Vista.

I have been having trouble with it running at full speed all the time. Come to find out, it is a defect in Vista that causes svchost to run your CPU up to capacity constantly. After running things almost constantly, I got 13 viruses cleaned off (more than I have had on the computer in the 7 years I have had it showed up in 3 weeks). Then I find svchost running 10 processes on my computer at the same time and one is running 80-100% of my CPU capacity anytime I am connected to the the internet. Even if I personally am not online.

The solution.... start over from scratch and reload Vista, etc., etc. Tried to contact Microsoft but after the run around screens, found out that I have to have an ACCOUNT to ask about what is to me a defect that they have not corrected.

ok, rant over. Thanks for listening.

  2. The peroxide will burn the skin. I had to treat a dog with a gunshot wound through the neck. Vet did the initial work with the stitches and staples. A week later, all sorts of gunk started flowing out. He said I could clean it with warm water and soap on the outside only.

  3. I buy a lot of non-perishables at Sam's. Usually their prices on produce are too high for me. But I also buy things like cheese and cheese slices, margarine and oil there. I normally don't buy any meat products as their prices on those are much higher unless I can buy a case at a time which I usually cannot.

  4. HE said something like that. I do believe that something akin to "why would you say something like that?" and/or "why would that be any of your business?" would come out of my mouth but it wouldn't be so nice. Inappropriate to say the least.

IF he was a close friend, he would be maybe allowed to ask such a question in private but never in front of other people much less a boss. But IF he was a close friend, he would know the answer. Cannot believe the gall and rudeness of some people.

  5. When I freeze juices, I use plastic juice jugs. Leave the lid not quite tight until it freezes and then tighten it up. But, I have also frozen juice, spaghetti sauce and chili in glass canning jars and hever had one break. I don't bother with which size lid as this stuff will come out when thawed.

If you want to thaw quickly, loosen the lid and put the jar, standing up, in a sink or bowl of barely warm water. As it thaws, it will pour out until the major part will fit through the lid.

  6. One of our egg people at the Farmers Market has started bringing up duck eggs. They sell for $3 per 1/2 dozen. He doesn't bring a lot(he also sells to a grocery store and a small market) but he is usually out of all eggs by about 9:00. Sale starts at 8. We have been educating his customers on duck eggs and now they are being asked for.

He has one customer whose child is allergic to chicken eggs but can she has found out that the allergy does not extend to duck eggs.

  7. Years ago, a local nurseryman was stopped at the airport because he was carrying cash. The greenhouses he dealt with in Texas would give him a better price with cash. He was arrested on suspicion of drug dealing or money laundering (they tried both to make sure they could keep the money) and the last I heard he was still trying to get his money back.

  8. We put ours in the compost pile. And, this year, that compost pile produced over 80 pot-luck tomato plants in various parts of the yard. We used the compost in the garden and also to put 12 new trees. These plants are much healthier and growing much better than the ones that we planted in the garden that we got from the vegetable farmer that sold his extra seedling plants. They are producing later but more and don't seem to have the early blight problems that we have in my garden area.

  9. I bought my prepaid cell at Dollar General. Paid like $15.00(they are the same price at Wal-Mart) for the phone and then I buy minutes or a card that has minutes on it (different stores do it differently). Mine is AT&T Pay as you Go phone. If you get more minutes before the ones you already had expire, then they roll over.

It can be $1.00/day when it is used plus $.10/minute for calls or it can be $2.00/day unlimited text and calling. I only use one about twice a week but carry one anytime I leave the house. It has come in handy when my van broke down. It doesn't work at my house but I have a landline so it is not necessary.

  10. First look at the price difference. If you will spend as much repackaging (seal-a-meal bags, etc)as you would buying the smaller container, why not just buy the smaller container. All other things being equal, for instance your time.

As for me, I would repackage. Right now, I have refrigerator and freezer and so an opened can of dry item (say, powdered buttermilk) would have the lid put on and put into the refrigerator.

  11. I hope you have more taters than we did, Philbe! I have 4 frozen gallon bags of tomatoes, scalded, peeled and quartered. Made cucumber relish the other day, dill pickles today and will be making bread and butters on Thursday. No cucumbers next year. Also should be pickling some jalapenos Thursday. I made Candy Apple jelly a few days ago. So nice to do some canning, it relaxes me and the food processor makes it so simple for the relishes.

You don't need to peel the tomatoes before freezing. Just wash and put in gallon bags and throw in the freezer. The peels will slip right off when they thaw. Freezing makes the water in the tomato swell up and does the same thing as scalding them.
