  3. I think I will have to see about getting a shuttle, I thought there might be one in some stuff that was my MIL's but, I haven't had a chance to look in it. I know we got rid of so much of her things, but, still have a tote with some craft type things, so need to get down and find the tote. Good luck, Annarchy. You will have to let us see a picture of what you do. I really would like to try this.
  4. GND, someone in here has a recipe and it called for 7 oz of lye. Not sure if that is a large can or small can or if lye comes in different sizes, since I have not bought any lately. Hope this helps.

  6. I had come in for a few last night and I was doing some checking and came up with this: Becca, I, well oldpine has Brewster on his side, it goes from William Brewster, to Johathan, to Mary, to Turner, to Ruth Turner, Rrince, Sylvester, Cook, to, Lydia Ring, who married, William Ripley, III, then to, Nathaniel Ripley, who married: Lucy Sturtevant. They had a boy, Alden Ripley, who married, Miranda Johnson,(this is just one of 3 Johnson's in the lines), They had Lucy S. Riply and on it goes. I have a Butts on my side, Isabelle (Belle) Elizabeth Butts who married Joseph Albert Gugin, they had 9 children. I have a Clark in my family too. I have to start with, Scotto CLARK married to Mary HASKELL, they had children, one of them was, Andrew CLARK who married Bethia HALL. They had at least one child, David, who married Thankful COLE and they had at least one child, David II who married, Mehitable Weeks. They had 6 children and one was Silas (David) Clark who married, Bertha (Bethany) Eldredge and they had at least one child, Dorcas Clark, who was my gr-gr-grandmother. Oldpine had a Dunn on his side, (Thomas) Henery Dunn this was in the 1800's. Edwards is on my side. Delbert Garald Edwards was married to, Blanche Ardell Radke they had my brother-in-law. He passed away about 11 years ago now. Oldpine and I both have Ferguson's on our sides. Thomas Ferguson is on my side way back. He married Ella Harmer, I don't have years for them, but, the first child was born in 1941, in Canada. The one on oldpine's side married to a Moore. Freeman, oldpine has this one too, Edna Freeman was married to Stuart Leonard Sargent. Fowler goes back to Phillip Fowler, born 1565 and we don't know who he married, but we have two children for him. Phillip Fowler and William, Phillip married a Mary and they had several children. And the list goes on and on. It goes to Jacob Fowler who married Mary Jones. Then to Ann Fowler who married Richard Collins and other children. Ann and Richard had 8 children. One was Anna and she married Samuel Currier, they had 6 children, and the one the line continues on is: John Currier, who married, Sarah Silver, they had 9 children and then it goes to: Irene (Irena) Currier, one of the 9, and she married, Edward Mecham, they had, well I have 2 children down is all. Roxena Mecham was one and she married Willaim Furlsbury Carter, they had 12 chldren. Anelia Carter was one of the children, she married, William Miller Van Ausdal they had 11 children. Well, it goes on and on. Hadley: George Hadley, Sr. married Elizabeth Spooner they had George Hadley, Jr. who married Mary Proctor. They had 7 children one was Samuel Hadley Sr. who married Jane Martin who was a sister to Richard Martin who was my great how many times? grandfather. Harvey: I have a Dorothy Harvey married to Henry Lancaster. They had several children. And it goes on and on. Ok, the Johnson side, man there are so many. One side is connected to the Kirby family in Canada. Another is on my mothers side. My grandmother Bartlett was a Johnson. Her husband was Levi and his parents were Joseph Johnson and Sarah, not sure of the last name here. One child was Levi and he and Mary Ann Gugin had 9 children. Another Johnson was on my BIL's side, his mom was a Johnson. I don't have her parents in my FTM for some reason, need to see about finding them and adding them in. King: I have Elvis Elmer King, married to Doris Bartlett, her great grandfather was also the father of my great grandfather. Or something like this. I'm working at night, so I'm getting tired. Anyway, they had Phillip King, Hildreth King and Lloyd Elvis King. Lloyd married Sharon Cobb and they had 3 kids, Shelley Lynn King, Eric Todd King and Andrea Jo King, these 3 were born in Macomb, IL. That is as far as the King goes. And everyone else goes on and on too. Just haven't checked them out. Maybe one day we can get these all figured out.
  7. Mtn Mama, I know of course, there is Johnson, Jones, and Mullen in the family. I'm also thinking the name 'Davis' could be too, I'd have to check for sure. You know, the name Freeman, is the first name of one of my cousins, I'm wondering if possibly it could be a bit back on his dad's side. Again, I have a lot of names in the other thread.
  8. If you go to the thread I started, "Surnames Starting With 'A'", you will find most of the names from my genealogy there. I'm thinking there could ba a 'King', 'Dowdy', and not sure what other name that some of you have listed. I do know there are 'Young's' in the family way back. Of course, Johnson, Jones, Bartlett, Lee, Gugin, Martin, are all the closest to me.
  9. I might have to see about trying this one day.

Hallmark, Inc. is recalling their big snowglobes because, left in sunlight, they concentrate the light like a magnifying glass and can start a fire with nearby paper. Just because they're recalling the "jumbo" ones, doesn't mean a smaller one couldn't do the same. ~~~~~~~~~ Jumbo snow globes + sunlight = consumer hazard Tue Dec 23, 2008 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some 7,000 jumbo-sized snow globes were recalled by Hallmark Cards Inc. because the holiday decorations can act as a magnifying glass when exposed to sunlight and ignite nearby combustible materials, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Tuesday. The snowman-shaped snow globes were sold in October and November at Hallmark Gold Crown stores nationwide for about $100 each. The consumer agency said Hallmark has received two reports of the snow globes igniting nearby materials but no injuries have been reported. Consumers who bought the snow globes, which measure 11 by 12 by 17 inches (28 by 30 by 43cm), should immediately remove them from exposure to sunlight and return to a Hallmark Gold Crown store for a full refund. http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnou.....News&rpc=76 ************************ 2. Reporting For Duty: http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthrea...st&Board=19 Posted by: Trip http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthr...ge=1#Post236045 How sad that so many never get it..... Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16's that disturbed their day at the mall. When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a bit. The complaint: 'Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 A.M., a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the 'Tom Cruise-wannabe's feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyn's early bird special? Any response would be appreciated.' The response: Regarding 'A wake-up call from Luke's jets' (Letters, Thursday): On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship fly-by of F-16's from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt... Jeremy Fresques. Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day. At 9 a.m.on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer's recount of the fly-by, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of Taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured. A four-ship fly-by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects. The letter writer asks, 'Whom do we thank for the morning air show? The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives. Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you.....Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul and liberty; the other for your natural freedom. (signed) Lt. Col. Grant L. Where The Heart Is: http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthrea...rd=2&page=1 Posted by: michelle http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthr...ge=1#Post264631 I'm not sure where to put this but since charity comes from the heart this was the best forum I could come up with... if it needs to be moved please feel free to do so. Thanks mods! I enjoy doing charity work. I try to do something for charities when I get the chance. I've been looking for something to do for the holidays (I know its getting close now) but I'm upset and annoyed at some of the charities. I hate to say it and I'm sorry I feel this way but it bothers me the requests some of them make. I haven't looked yet this year (haven't seen the tree up yet) but last year the angel tree was full of nothing but angels asking for outrageous gifts like playstations, etc. Expensive items I can't afford to buy my own kids. I'm going to look again this year but I doubt it will have changed. I saw the ad for Toys for Tots and wanted to do it til I saw it says the gifts 'must be new with a value of $10 or higher'... since when do you HAVE to spend that amount on a charity gift? I can get decent toys for cheaper than that and help more kids. Looked at some of the soldier programs as I'd love to get into writing a soldier or send a care package to one but so far all I've found are ones saying that if you adopt a soldier you have to write once a week and send at least one care package a month. Thats wonderful but I'd like to help even if I can't make that kind of contribution. I'm just aggravated right now. I want to contribute to a charity but I'm feeling outraged. They all appear to be self-righteous idiots! Demanding that if I can't afford to spend XXXX on a donation its not worth it. Even if all I can afford to do is buy a couple of small toys from the Dollar Tree or something I'd like to help. Where are the charities that truly need the help and appreciate anything you can do even if it is small? **************************** 4. She said the health dept already has the flu vaccine, but she didn't say if they were giving it yet. Tuesday afternoon, I went with DH to our family doctor (he hurt his rotator cuff) and I asked if they had the flu vaccine in yet. He said they had it in, but didn't plan to start giving it out until the end of Oct. They don't want to give it too soon, or it won't be as effective during the peak flu time. Urban Homesteading: http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthrea...d=35&page=1 Posted by: LaBellaVita http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthr...ge=1#Post253121 Hi everyone, I have a storage room off of the master bedroom that just so happens to be above the garage (2 story house). This room is not very big, regular room height for a small section, maybe 4 ft wide, then it slopes on down to the floor under the roofline, and the depth runs alongside the whole bedroom wall. Now that its cooler here, I've been thinking about moving our stash of supplies off the master bedroom floor, into the storage room (dear hubby is not too fond of cases of food, oil, etc, but we don't have a basement nor much closet space so I didn't know where else to put it). This is basically what I have, can all if it go into an unheated storage room, or will it get too cold? * canned fruits and veggies * canned tuna and chicken * rice milk in foiley cartons * coffee, tea * molasses * juice in jugs * juice boxes and milk boxes * ketchup and mustard * spices * lots o' pasta * dehydrated veggies * veggie and olive oils I'm sure there is more up there, but don't feel like digging through it all. Maybe the better question would be, what can't go? My white rice, brown rice, flour, sugar, oats, & wheat is in the garage, though I could move it up there too. Is it too cold for those things too? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Don't want oozing going on... If I need to make room for this stuff under the bed, in the back of every closet, in my sock drawer, please let me know. Here in GA we do get below freezing, but not as many days of it obviously as those up north would. ************************ 10. It was 4 days of suggestions for meals. They were each under 5$ and supposed to feed a family of four. When I looked at the ad closely I noticed it was heavy on processed foods and very little fresh foods. Can you put together a meal for 4 for under 5$ that is healthy? I thought we might give each other ideas. Off the top of my head I have seen chicken leg/thigh quarters for 49 cents a pound. Two pounds would be enough for 4 people. They would be easy to bake and cover with a little bbq sauce if you want. Sweet potatoes have been 25 cents lb. lately. They are delicious baked with a little butter on them. Cabbage is around 49 cents a pound. Slaw is easy to make. You would still have enough of the 5 dollars left to make biscuits or homemade garlic bread. This meal is packed with nutrition and is well balanced. Any other ideas? *********** There are a lot of ideas, so please read this post. ************************** 11. With the way and places that people live we all have different storage situations. We need to try different approaches for storage and rotating our stocks until we find the one that works the best for our situation. Stocking supplies is the most important thing we can do for ourselves, and our family. The next most important two things we should do is date and rotate our stocks. These two things should be done in order to assure we are using our preps and not letting things get out of date. Here are some links to read so you can see how others are managing their preps. http://www.thefoodguys.com/foodcalc.html http://www.providentliving.org/content/dis...-4070-1,00.html http://standeyo.com/News_Files/menu.food.store.html http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthr...ge=6#Post121392 http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthr...ge=6#Post120006 http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthrea...ge=11#Post91453 http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthrea...ge=14#Post79494 http://www.mrssurvival.com/forums/ubbthrea...ge=22#Post31085 A question often asked is “How long does food stay good” Here are a few links to help answer this question. http://www.waltonfeed.com/grain/life.html http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/dp_fnut/HRAP/STORAGE/cupstor.htm This is how a few people do it: I only have five places where food prep items are located - and I do not spread it out any more than that or it would become impossible to keep track of. Of those locations... there is an order of rotation that ensures I keep a handle on it... pantry is current opened/usage items stocked with things moved in from the first tier storage rooms (there is two). Second tier storage areas have items that will not be used within a year's time (longer term items). Once a year, I rotate items from the second tier storage areas into the first tier storage that are ready to be rotated into use and then I replace with new products in the long term storage area. At the time that I do the rotation... I do a couple of inventory management things: First, I do a physical inventory and put in on my inventory sheets (computer spreadsheet) - this only get's done once a year and gives me a baseline to evaluate what needs ramping up and what is overstocked. Second, I clean the storage areas including the pantry shelves (vacuum up cobwebs, spilled items, and dust - wipe down surfaces) and move the first to be used items forward and put the recently moved in items at the back. While doing this I inspect the items and make sure nothing has developed problems. Finally, I date all new items coming in with the date purchased/stored(i.e. Jan 2008). This get's done once a year. Last year I started doing all my major restocking at the start of the year (prebuying to replace the current year's expected usage to lock in lower prices) and that makes this system work even better... as I just do all the inventory management and restocking all within a months time frame and then am done! It works quite well actually but requires carving out some time for the rotation/cleaning/inventory and saving your cash for the big annual restocking purchases. It's cheaper though and more efficient in my mind. Another one: I have one pantry and everything gets crammed into it except what goes under the bed, behind the couch, on top closet shelves and etc. Once we are a bit more finished with the remodeling though will be another story. I'm hoping to put in shelves that can be loaded from the back and used from the front. That way there is less moving things around other than moving them forward on the shelf. I do not keep a written inventory but do take frequent visual ones to see what needs to be tweaked. I buy certain things yearly also but not all at the same time. When I find a good sale on something we use regularly, like T-paper, I buy enough to last a year or two depending on its storage life. Those are usually non-food items and are stored separately. Because I buy this way it frees up funds to buy the next good sale. Most of my monthly buying is based on the sales ads. Most of my food items are easily inventoried at a glance but only because I've been doing it so many years that all I have to do is calculate approximately what is on a shelf and the time of year to know if I need to stock up further at the next sale. One thing I do is to mark all items with the date of purchase and use the oldest first. Canned goods and such I also mark with the name of the product inside just in case we have a problem and the cans lose their labels. I had that happen once and it's not always nice to have a surprise when preparing a meal LOL. One thing that I do keep very close tabs on is the hidden inventory of food and non-food items to make sure they are rotated. Normally I just take new items as I buy them into the area and remove the older ones for everyday use. Many of those items are for long term storage so they are not switched as often. If "someone" decided they needed my pantry of food more than I did at least there is a chance they would not find the hidden supplies. Here is what can happen if you don’t have an inventory of your supplies: I thought I had more flour but I could not find it. So I chalked it up to having been used. That was until last night. I was looking of something in the hall closet and there in a big 21/2 gallon zip lock bag were 2-5lb bags of flour. Not my favorite brand but hey its 10lb of flour! And: Yes...I sometimes have to shift things around and am always pleasantly surprised to find some "lost" item. I thought I had used up all of our soap (but could not remember doing THAT, either) only to remember that I had moved it from its original storage location to a new set of storage drawers that I had simply...forgotten about! And: I keep a little coupon saver type pouch and list my preps and where I have stashed them on index cards. It is a nice system - I carry it with me where ever I go. If I spot a sale I know what to purchase. If I have extra dollars, I know what I could use, yet. It is a good system unless I forget to write down my purchases, however! We ate a lot of sauer kraut last winter because I bought, stored and didn't write down the fact that I had stashed twelve cans of Kraut!! ***************************************** I wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR. 12. I'll have to check these out too, haven't had a chance to check the others yet either.
  13. I'll have to check and see if any of these look like they might belong with the names I have.
  14. to Mrs. S. I think most of those names you listed that I have listed are really from way back then too. Of course, that could make us 8th or 9th or 10th cousins. One just never knows. I think I started working on genealogy when our youngest was about 3 or less and he will be 37 this month. I really enjoy learning who and where and what. Do you have a FTM or what kind do you have?? I know there are so many different kids of genealogy programs out there. I have a Rugg Bradley married to a Kirby, another one is married to a Wackerly, the Wackerly's were from Ohio,; another married to a Gile, and the last one married to another Wackerly. Brewster: one is married to a, Lucretia Oldham, of Oshawa, Ont, Canada and another is married to John Turner, then another one to Benjamin Bartlett, antoher to Micheal Hinton: another to a Mary unknown. Yes, the Hoyt's were back then too, then there is the Hoyte. They come in someplace in our family too, back to Richard Martin. I have wondered if some of the Hoyt changed their name to Hoyte. You know people often did that back then. Happy Hunting. I work on genealogy for a while then stop for a while then start in again. I've been working on it for over 30 years now.
