Bookworm
Today DH and the oldest two went for a little shopping trip. He said that not too long after they started their drive that our 7-yo had white-looking bumps on his cheeks and soon they turned reddish. Both cheeks are still red and feel a little hot to touch he flinched a little and I asked if it was sensitive and he said it was. He didn't eat anything out of the ordinary for breakfast but do you ladies think it could be Fifth's disease or does it sound like an allergic reaction? He's had the red cheeks since around 9 this morning and it's 8:20 p.m. here now. THanks for your help! Link to comment
bluegrassmom
Hmmm, I had Fifth's Disease as a child and my daughter had it a few years ago. I just remember that her rash was so bad looking that it truly scared me. When I took her the the dr. they had all the interns and everyone come look at her because they said they had never seen a case that was, "so textbook." As well as I remember, her rash was in large circles. It has an almost lacey pattern. I can't remember how she looked when it was first coming on. ~ If she was just flushed the way you describe your child. But it didn't take long for the rash to get worse and get that lacey pattern. You need to watch the rash, see if it spreads and if it starts coming up in a roundish lace like pattern. Link to comment
mom11
If your child has Fifth's Disease...Please keep him/her away from all pregnant women. Fifth's Disease can cause stillbirth. This happened to me. My daughter had it and I caught it from her. It does something to the babies blood and if your doc. is on top of things, the baby can be saved with blood transfusions, done in utero...My baby just wasn't that lucky. Fifth Disease is also known as "Slapped Face' Syndrome, because the child has bright red cheeks. It is also usually a very mild illness, unless the child has a weakened immune system. I shudder everytime I hear of this going around. Link to comment

Snowmom
, Bookworm, I just did a google search and came up with a number of sites, but will only put a few in here. http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/infection...iral/fifth.html http://children.webmd.com/tc/Fifth-Disease-Topic-Overview http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000977.htm http://parenting.ivillage.com/tp/tphealth/0,,n6hd,00.html http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/188_677.asp There is a chance it could be something else too, I know the dr. says that sinus infection will do that, as I have a problem with my one cheek being red a lot and that is what they said my problem is. Bookworm
Thanks for all your help ladies. Mom11, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I did a search last night and I knew that the slapped face look was one symptom. This morning the redness had diminished quite a bit and he feels fine but we're just watching it. He is on Zyrtec daily for allergies so it would seem to be that an allergy would not be the case. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again! Link to comment
Bookworm
Update - well, either he didn't have it or it was extremely mild because there has not been any sign of a rash since early Tuesday morning (the 9th). Thanks again for all the help! Link to comment
