Vic303
There's a good sale on blueberries here this week at Sprouts, and I want to jam them eventually, but need a propane burner first (glass top stove not good for canning). So I wanted to freeze them in the chest freezer. Do I need to do anything special to preserve them in the freezer? Parboil? Just bag 'em and freeze? What works best? Thanks! Vic Link to comment
savagerabbit
vic, When I freeze berries, I like to put them on a jelly roll pan (cookie sheet.. whatev..) and freeze them individually and then dump them in a gallon bag. I think this will depend greatly on what you plan on doing with them tho. (: Link to comment
Cat
I just bag them and freeze them, I don't even bother to wash them. Washing them adds water that will make them stick together into "clumps". When I use them, they're still loose, so I can measure out what I want. Then I wash them and use them. In your case, you can wash them and then can them. Let them thaw first. The worst thing that can happen with freezing blueberries is that sometimes the skins get a little "tougher", but canning will soften them anyway. Have fun!! Link to comment
Violet
I would rinse, measure into the amounts called for in your jam recipe, then freeze in ziplocs. That way all you have to do is thaw and make the jam from them. I rinse mine then put through the salad spinner to remove the water. Works well. Link to comment
ScrubbieLady
I just put mine i a freezer bag and pop in the freezer. Wash before using. They stay separate so you can take out what you need. Link to comment
