Deerslayer
Ok, my grocery store is having a GREAT sale Friday on boneless skinless chicken breast. I have a lot of them in my freezer, but want to take advantageof this sale. I would like to try to can them but, my question is this, I mainly use these for homemade chicken strips. After they are canned (hot pack) will they still make good chicken strips?? Or would they be tough? I also like to grill them, same question?? Will they be tough or the same?? I am canning old venison all up, but have not canned any chicken, so I just don't want to waste my time if it can't be used like we use it... Quote Link to comment
Deerslayer
Ohhhh. Just noticed potatoes for $1 for 10 pounds. After potatoes are canned, can you make mashed potatoes out of them, or kabobs, or are you just stuck with boiled ???? Quote Link to comment
Cat
The chicken that you can will be cooked, so no, they won't make good strips or grilled as you're accustomed to. They're best for putting into casseroles and other dishes like chicken-and-noodles. Canned potatoes don't work well for using like fresh. They're cooked, so they're a whole different thing. Here are some threads where we've discussed it more in depth. (I'm racing through here at the moment, so this is more complete.) CrabGrassAcres
Look for recipes featuring canned or leftover chicken. Tons of fun and tasty things to do with it. Most of my chicken gets canned. I do like it grilled occasionally, but it isn't a problem to keep a small amount of raw chicken frozen as long as there isn't more meat in the freezer than I could can in a day or two if the power went down. Deerslayer
Thanks. I guess I need to look at the canned chicken like "canned " chicken from the store. I use it a lot for casseroles and stir fry. I was glad to read the potatoes can be fried, thats a favorite around here. I am trying so hard to take advantage of sales and use canning to keep the freezers from being so full right now, I am just trying to keep from wasting money. Some things we only eat a certain way, so there is no use in canning it if you can't eat it that way. Quote Link to comment
Cat
EXACTLY! But at least you can get the info about using it *before* trying it. Isn't the internet wonderful???! Quote Link to comment
