  1. Fry's (AKA Kroger) had a case sale recently. The checker rang up my garbanzo beans individually (not realizing it was a case price). When he realized his error as I unloaded more cases of things, he apologized and started to correct his error. That's when I found that the individual price was LESS than if he used the case price! Always check the individual price when stores have the case sales. It was $0.59 per can individually and $0.83 per can by the case.
  2. My son had a cat that would catch mice and rats, eat the bodies and leave the heads and tails in the hallway outside his bedroom door. It was always interesting walking down the hallway in the dark!
  3. My virus software keeps telling me this is a malicious site. Help!
  4. I bought a flat of strawberries through Bountiful Baskets for jam making. Unfortunately, they were not the greatest in flavor and seemed a bit under-ripe. I (silly me!) went ahead with the no sugar pectin recipe using apple juice concentrate. I tasted the jam before it was ready to can and thought it was not nearly sweet enough, so I added some sugar. Even though it jelled and looks good, I am not impressed with the flavor. Any suggestions on how to fix the flavor as I open each jar? I used pint jars, so the quantities are small. Possible recipes I could use it in instead of using it for jam?
  5. My mom's side of the family would be Hopper and Taylor. My dad's side would be Tidmore and McElroy. I've been working on my family history for several years now. I was thrilled to finally find an aunt (my dad's sister). She contacted me years ago shortly before my dad died. He had left my mom and me and gone back there. He died of a heart attack. I finally mangaged to find her when a cousin ran across my family tree on ancestory.com. She messaged me and got my information to my aunt. I am planning to make a trip to that area to do some in-person research and finally meet my relatives including four half-brothers. I'm sure we have a lot of catching up to do.
  6. I was just wondering if anyone is in Alabama? I just found a long-lost aunt, four half-brothers, and a pile of cousins there. My aunt lives in Glencoe. I have other family in Cullman.
  7. Hi all! I peeked around a few corners and saw a bunch of new members as well as the "old" ones. I just wanted to pop in and see what was going on with everyone. As for us...my DD and I bought a house together after she divorced her abusive husband. That was about a year and a half ago. I'm helping her with her two little boys (age 5 and 2). She has permanent injuries in her back and wrist so can't really work. Fortunately, between a settlement she got from him and cashing out my retirement, we managed to buy the house outright. I was laid off for several months in 2010. Went back to teaching for awhile, then found a good job at the university. I'm paying off bills from being off work and putting together a business plan. With the experience I'm getting in my new job and the fact that I'm finishing my master's degree this August (one more class!), I will be able to start my own business doing grant writing and evaluations for various organizations and agencies. Maybe then we can think about getting out of the city since I'll be able to work from home. Right now I am struggling to keep our grapevines and fruit trees alive in this heat and drought. We have had too many days of 110+ heat and only 1/3 of an inch of rain this year. I lost two of our grapevines. I didn't even bother with a "summer" garden. I haven't had time to put up a shade structure, which is a must for summer gardens here. I hope everyone is doing well, or as well as can be expected in these uncertain times. I think those of here at MrsS will fare better than most others
  8. If you want to dry them, you have to let the beans mature before you pick them. In other words, the pods need to be well filled out. You won't get quite as many beans as when you pick more often, but if you want dried beans, that's what you have to do.
  9. Family names I am researching include: House Taylor Hopper Walther Thomas McElroy The Taylors and Hoppers are most recently from Alabama but I think there may be some NC connections. McElroy could be Alabama, Texas, and Michigan.
  10. My mom's maiden name is Taylor. Her dad was William Isaac Taylor married to Daisy Lee Hopper. My DD's husband (soon to be ex) is a LeMaster. I think they are from Ohio or Iowa.
  11. TP roll cores? They are great for containing electrical cords. Keeps them in a nice, neat bundle. They also make good cat toys.
  12. Oh, that reminds me, I bought the coolest pattern making system. You just take your measurements and you can make a whole bunch of different things for men, women, and kids. It's hard to explain how it works, but it's neat and I only paid a dollar for it. As for fabric...we have boxes and boxes and still can't pass up a good deal. Same with sewing machines, thread, and any other item needed to make clothing and such.
  13. Try posting and looking on craigslist.com.
  14. Hmmm...how about when you have an extra bit of cash you debate with yourself if it would be better spent for: 1. a better grain mill 2. another firearm 3. a camper shell to make BO easier
  15. 1 Setting our own schedule (vacations, getting up, visiting relatives, going to the zoo or museum or library) (Their friends who attended school were jealous and even asked if they could home school with us!) 2 Watching them grow and discover new things 3 Knowing that they were not being subjected to 'peer pressure' (We had the house where all the neighborhood kids congregated) 4 Developing a deeper relationship with them because we not only had quality but quantity of time together 5 Having them tell me as adults that they were glad I home schooled them and that they are thinking of doing the same when they have children
  16. The long lines and stripped shelves remind me of how some stores look around here right after people get paid and there is a big sale! I don't think the stores here keep a very large stock of most items on hand instead they function on JIT (just in time) deliveries which are not adequate when the demand is high. Heaven help those who don't prep if TSHTF!

  18. Hi, I am new to this website and new to alot of things that are really important in this busy world. How would you suggest I start getting into the way things were a long time ago, like raising chickens, baking bread and those good things in life. I have a home with 5 acres but it is located in the city limits. I believe by city ordinance it is okay to have a few chickens. I can bake homemade bread okay, but what would yal suggest I need to do to really get serious about the old times. We eat out nearly at least 5 times a week. Isn't that horrible and my daughter that is very young will grow up to remember all the hustle and bustle and not the important things in life. Thanks, for your ideas and suggestions.
