  1. Welcome to all newbies..... I promise you will enjoy it in here. You will quickly make new friends. And Someone will always bring something good to eat up on the porch, never no doubt.
  2. The reason I took down my dining canopies is that we are pretty well through with the yearly outdoor entertaining. So we decided to start with the back yard and get it cleaned up and get everything in its place for winter, now. Plus, we needed something to do. I need to get up some extra chicken feed for the winter. Now this weekend we will start cleaning out the flower beds getting them ready for fall. Just trying to stay ahead of the game. Get the outdoor things that need done before it gets to cold out to do it.....
  3. Got up this morning read the newspapers, and then cooked abig breakfast. Did about 5 loads of laundry. Then spent the afternoon just lazing around watching the races on tv. and did not cook supper, we just nibbled all day.Me and dh did get to discussing things about the upcoming winter and I told him what my intentions were for preparing. I told him that I wanted to get up at least 6 weeks worth of laundry supplies, bath supplies, tissue paper, paper towels, cold and flu and stomach medications. He got all excited. I told him if nothing else we could always put these things on layaway. and should he be out of work for any length of time due to bad and cold weather this winter, we will be prepared and will not have to worry about household supplies. I printed us up a list and posted it on the refrigerator, and whenever one of us goes to walmart, we are to take the list with us, and then as we get each item stocked we mark it off the list..... He is anxious to get it started. It will be one last worry on his mind come the bad winter months.....
  4. My E.S. springer spaniel has never attempted to bite anyone and we have had him since he was a pup. When we drive up in the drive way, he will bring a beer can to my husband and bring me a mop every time.......
  5. spent friday afternoon outside cleaning up the yard and raking up, and picking up things that need to go to the trash, any broken toys, and etc. took down dining canopies in the back yard and put away. I am going to spend sunday, getting the dogs groomed,dh is going to shear jesse(our english springer spaniel), his hair gets so long and thick, that you have to do it just like a sheep... also cleaned up our shed, so if it gets too cold, we can put the dogs (jesse, the springer, and Fanna, the pit bull) in the shed. we have a small heater out there for them, to keep them warm....
  6. SPENT THE WHOLE DARN DAY OUT SPENDING MONEY........ went grocery sale shopping today. got some good deals, then went to walmart and put me and the kids a couple of new sweat suits and the whole family new underwear and all three kids some new shirts and winter gear for dh, he needs neck gaiters and a new toboggan, since he has to work out in the cold......man I am absolutley pooped......
  7. The English springer spaniel is the most friendly lovable dog you will ever find, they are just like a big baby... They love to be loved by adults and children. They are a good sized dog and do have long hair, but they are worth the trouble....
  8. The date of that ice storm was in 1973, and we also had a heavy snowstorm in 1977...which shut down the city for several days.....
  9. I was just in the Old Farmers Almanac weather forum playing around and reading the latest postings on what people think about this upcoming winter: It sounds very interesting; I am going to post some of what was said: This is from Robert Hartge: Hi folks: I can answer the questions about wasps and ants. They usually start preparing early if there is to be a bad winter. This would occur in June or July, like this year. You can tell ants are burrowing into the soil by just looking at them and if they are going deeper in the soil, that seems to be the case this year. and they are headed down and not up, nature prepares animals for the harsh winter days and they seem to know before we do, if only they could talk. The NAO has remained active for the last 2 years and appears so for this year with neutral conditions. That means more troughs, snowstorms, and intense cold for the east coast of the U.S. It does not mean a winter so severe that we cannot bear it, and nothing like movies portray, but remember we are now entering sunspot minimums, with the next peak of a minimum in March 2007. Our most severe winters seem to correspond with these minimum events and over the next few years, we may see worse winters in the U.S. Mainly cold, like 20's but nothing like subzero for 3 months unless you live in southern canada. Yes, I do believe that the cold and snow will make it to the southeast and deep south. You will not escape some winter. It will obviously not be as bad as farther north, but it will likely not be a mild winter by any means. There are always signs in nature of a very intense summer or winter if you look for them. For instance, thickness in the trees that are deciduous in the spring usually means a hot summer as they are attempted to be sheltered by nature. Conversely, animal prepare for winter and that includes the insect world, the earlier in the season it happens, the more severe the winter is apt to be. Nature seems to support a bad winter in western Europe and the Eastern U.S. this year. Those who like warm weather take heart, it might be likely that the intense heat the central and eastern us saw in 2002 will return in 2005 after this harsh winter.I do believe that 2005 will have a record hot summer for most of the central and eastern us. Last year it was northern europe, this year Alaska, and next year, it will likely be us. See if I am not right about this winter and next summer. The signs of nature are there if you look at them..... ALSO FROM THIS ROBERT,THERE WAS A QUESTION ABOUT THE ANTS DISAPPEARING ALREADY IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND WHAT IT COULD MEAN PERTAINING TO WINTER WEATHER: HERE IS HIS RESPONSE: The reason the ants have disappeared in South Carolina probably is that they are now burrowing into the soil. This a sure sign of a 1977 style winter with this happening so far south so early. Get Ready. It's been a long time since we have had a brutal winter of this magnitude, but I have some great concerns with the Greenland ice shelf and the North pole ice expanding. Also, though we will likely see the usual July and august heat waves, by the end of August, witha cold spell on the way, you will know that a severe winter is coming. We are also in the neutral pattern and staying there and there will be nothing to prevent the cold shots from the artic from directly descending. About the ant holes, they constantly make new ones, and the old ones eventually wither away, this is happening quite early this year. I know I am putting my self out on a limb, but the NAO or North Atlantic Oscilllation really goes intoa negative phase every 20 to 25 years, the last time was the late 1970"s and we had 3 successive bad winters, the third being the worst. We have had two bad winters in this current phase. The third one is comingup. This may lay some creedance to the fact that 2005 may be the worst of the three with both bitter cold and the heavy snow and icestorms. I think this winter will be one to remember. [i HAVE A VIDEO TAPE THAT MY UNCLE SENT TO ME RIGHT AFTER MY MOTHER DIED, IT WAS MADE ON MISSIONARY RIDGE IN CHATTANOOGA TENNESSEE. IT WAS OF A MAJOR ICESTORM, IT WAS SOMETIME IN THE 70'S. I AM GOING TO PULL THE TAPE BACK OUT HERE IN JUST A SECOND AND SEE WHAT DATE IS ON IT.] IF THAT IS WHAT WE ARE IN FOR, THEN YES, BY ALL MEANS EVERYONE SHOULD START GETTING PREPARED NOW. THE ICE WAS LIKE 4 TO 6 INCHES THICK, ALL THE TR EES WERE BENT DOWN, NO POWER LINES WERE SPARED. WE WERE ABOUT 8 DAYS WITHOUT LIGHTS OR WATER AND NO WAY TO GET ANYWHERE TO GET ANYTHING........I WILL CHECK THIS VIDEOTAPE AND WILL POST THE DATE ON IT, HERE IN A LITTLE BIT.[uNIKEMOM]
  10. I made two casseroles ,one was cheesy chicken with noodles and the other was egg rolls. on the egg rolls I use zatarains dirty rice mix, one small head of cabbage, two whole potatoes, two eggs, and 1 lb of crumbled up ground beef(that has been cooked), Mix all of this together. It makes a huge bowl full. I made the eggs rolls that we needed for that meal, and then put the rest of that mixture into baggies, there was enough left for two more meals. Also with the cheesy chicken, there was enough for another meal, so also froze it. That is three meals saved and ready to eat.... I canned some green beans out of the garden.and went all day without turning on the air conditioner, or the dryer......
  11. please take in mind that none of the soap or shampoo had been used, just the packaging was damp....or a messed up label...
  12. That's the way I am, I also do that with psychic predictions, just too see if they get anything right. BUt the almanacs have some very interesting tips and useable things in them. I wait all year for this moment. Man,Do you think that maybe I need to get a life?
  13. As god as my witness: I just stepped outside, went to check on my green beans, I kept hearing something in the trees. Sounded like something falling. I knew it wasn't rain, it hasn't started yet, it sounded like nut shells being thrown down. I was thinking to myself surely not it is still several weeks away before the squirrels start gathering. But sure enough, I kept watching, and I looked down at the ground, it is covered in pieces of hickory nut shells. and just as I started back in the house, I got hit on the head with a nut shell.... Those little boogers are already stockpiling their nuts for winter.... WE have 6 hickory nut trees in our yard. I noticed that the squirrels have been running back and forth to them the past few days......... The foxfire book says: it will be a bad winter if squirrels gather nuts early(middle or late september)... It doesn't say anything about the first week of august. Man it must be gonna be a doozy........I don't even think they are ripe and ready yet...... but also noticed the pieces of shell that was on the ground, they are the thickest shells I have ever seen. (foxfire says: a bad winter if hickory nuts shells are heavy).....I just had to come back in and post this.....I couldnt wait.....

  18. I am just about finished reading Sylvia Brownes, book "Prophecy,What does your future hold for you." and will be starting reading Joyce Meyers" Straight talk." It is about over coming emotional battles with the power of gods word....Ilove to listen to Joyce preach on tv. and This book hopefully will help me, through the depression, loneliness, that I feel since mom's death....
  19. First off, If I get 10 acres of land to build my litte shack, there will be no renting out. I will be living in it permanently.nothing extravagant, just something I can pay cash for up front, the septic and lines are no problems, my husband works in construction, he is a licensed plumber and we have access to all the equipment. So in those terms all I would really have to worry about is property taxes and insurance. I am not cash poor, my husband brings home $1200.00 a week. I was raised living this way, the raising of the vegetables and the animals in simplier times, and that is the way my husband and I want to bring up our kids....To get them out of this high tech world and let them see for themselves what it takes to be self sufficient......
  20. I am a big user of suave products, they are really good, and 1/2 the price of the bigger brands. Plus when the coupons come out, you can always pick up a bottle of shampoo of hair spray for just the price of the tax. A couple of cents.....and our stores always have buy one get one free sales on the vo5 and the suave products, that is when I stock up... Also on the shampoos and soaps from the motels... Last year I worked at a local motel, a big name place.....as housekeeper, If the guests do not use the soap or shampoo out of their rooms and the labels on the bottles or the wrapping on the soaps get the slightest bit wet, they have to be thrown out. Not me, I took me a ziploc baggie, anytime there was a messed up label on a package, i would place it in that baggie and bring it home, I now have over 65 bottles of shampoo and over 80 bars of soap in my stock. The owner knew what I was doing, and he welcomed it, He appreciated the fact that it was not going into the garbage.....I have also donated several bars of this to the school for art class.......
  21. forgot to add housekeeper for local hospital......
  22. the people, If you have a problem and need someone to talk too, you always have good friends to talk you through in here...
  23. This is the first time that I have come across this topic, I have found it very interesting: The jobs I have had are: Waitress at Godfathers pizza babysitter night manager at Rite aid Pharmacy counter clerk/inspector for dry cleaners attendant coin laundry clerk at shoe store housekeeper at local motel also am a parent volunteer at my childrens school, and den mother for cub scouts.....
  24. ok, I am back the storm has settled.... but I would raise the chickens for eggs, and eating, use some, sale some. I would build me a smoke house, to smoke meats, which you could always do the meat smoking and curing for other people for a price, or use it for bartering.. Would also have my own little work shop, where I could make soap and candles and learn to do weaving. Which these items could be sold also or used for barter.I would also have cattle, goats, pigs. from the goats there could be plenty of cheeses and from the cattle plenty of home made butter, which could also be sold..... I would also have me a stocked pond or live on a creek with plenty of fish. I am not a fish eater, but if I get hungry enough i could. Or of course you could always sale it. Then I would use some of the money to buy fabrics and make items to sale..........
  25. If any of your grocery stores carry blue bunny ice cream, you have got to try, nascar speedway sundae ice cream, oh man it is delicious.... It is vanilla ice cream with ribbons of chocolate, chocolate covered peanuts and tiny fudge race cars... Oh it is wonderful, tried it for the first time today...
