  1. Most of us may be familiar with Clear gel, a modified corn starch that is used to thicken sauces and pie fillings etc. There are 2 types....regular and instant. The regular is the only thickener that I know of that is approved for canning. I have just recently learned that you can substitute regular clear gel for pectin. There are some adjustments that need to be made to the recipe when using clear gel instead of pectin but the great news is that it has no expiration date like pectin does. This will be a great item to store in our long term preps!! For more info go to: http://www.foodsafety.wisc.edu/assets/pdf_Files/using_clear_jel_03.pdf and 1 source to purchase in bulk: http://www.myspicer.com/shop/clear-gel/

    Ham Radio

Our group took classes to prepare for the Ham test. However, we learned that you have to "identify" yourself every 10 minutes while on air, you can not use any form of code talk, your personal information is listed online & the govt can suspend all ham operations in an emergency. With all that we decided not to proceed. We all have short wave radios we can listen too for global information, have walkie talkies for short distances and bought cb radios with SSB (single side band) which can get 20-30 mile range. I can pick up a lot further than 30 miles on mine but can not transmit more than about 25 miles. It suits us fine because we all live within 20 miles of each other. Just something to think about.
  4. Recently purchased one of those cheapie Harbor freight solar panel kits. Need to set it up and test it.Will probably have to buy a better charge controller for it. I need to also buy another inverter. The one I have is 1500 watts but it is a "modified" sine wave...Some equipment won't run well on it..so I need to buy a "pure" sine wave one. They are alot more expensive so will buy a smaller wattage..My dad's oxygen concentrator needs pure sine wave. Also recently bought a cb set up. Have to get the antenna put up and test unit. After that I will unplug and emp proof the cb radio. Just ordered a 2nd hand murs radio. It's a portable base unit for some security sensors we have but can also use it as a 2 way radio, so needed a 2nd one. My next few purchases are a 2nd solar kit..that will bring us up to 90 watts...still not much..(for Christmas) and some motion detector lights.
  5. What I am wondering about is the cost of policies outside of Obamacare. Sure, they say they can't deny you for preexisting things, BUT noone said they did away with the MIB..medical Information Bureau. I am sure they will still look you up and charge you accordingly.
  6. Here is an excellent article on EMP. I know we are probably tired of reading about it but I am so glad I read yet another article. With the predicted possible solar flare threat coming up soon, it would be wise to read this article. http://www.futurescience.com/emp/emp-protection.html Here is an audio program with an astrophisicist talking about the predicted solar flares.

  9. This is really cool. I came across this 2 part video on testing your faraday cage. I have done the radio test in the garbage can but not the cell phone test. All of my small mini faraday cages blocked the signals except the metal eye glass case (probably because it does not have a real tight closure. However, if I wrap my cell phone in alum foil, it blocks the signals. Part 1 Part 2
  10. The link didn't work. Can you tell us the name of the tool please. Thanks Never mind..It's working now.

  13. I've been wanting one of these for a long time. I found this Green Mountain Mower in almost mint condition at the flea market today for 25.00!!! I think the owner probably didn't realize that it needed to be adjusted as it didn't cut to well when we got home until we made some adjustments. It cuts great now. I also got 4 cases of Mason quart jars for 20.00. http://www.amazon.com/The-Vermont-Country-Store-Mountain/dp/B007BLAFII/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1366501906&sr=8-2&keywords=Green+Mountain+Mower
  14. I was getting tired of digging in my garbage can faraday cage everyday to get out my cell phone & charger, and zip drives so I started looking around for something small to keep them in that would be more handy. I am not sure that these will work but I think as long as the lids fight tightly and you wrap your phone, zip drives , etc in paper towel or newspaper, etc to isolate unit from touching the tin, they should work. I gathered all the small tins I had and they seem to work great. I can still keep my zip drives on my desk. I also fouind and old hard steel eyeglass case to keep my cell phone in when I am on the road. I am sorry that I have forgotten how to resize the pic.
  15. As I mentioned in an earlier post, my small group started taking classes to prepare for our ham radio licenses. After 3 classes and many hours of study, we have decided to not go the ham radio route. Each class we learned different things that discouraged us from continuing. Of course in registering, you are put on another list. Every ten minutes you have to state your call letters (who you are). You can not use any type of code talk. During WWII the govt jammed the signals and it was forbidden to use the radios. Although you can transmit much farther on a ham radio, it just didn't seem worth it to us. We were planning on spending about 800.00 plus to get a mobile unit ( much more powerful than a hand held), with a very good antenna, plus a marine battery, etc. Then we thought about marine radios. You can not use them on dry land! Soo, we are back to cb's which are only good for a few miles. We all also have short wave radios. You have to buy a better antenna for them, but they can pick up channels all over the world for info. I have 2 ham radio books if anyone would like them at a discount. One I haven't even opened.
