  1. Mt. Rider, Don't know what the 11 selected bases will be used for yet. But most likely a containment field for the sick. But don't quote me on that. Will have to check on it. When I get a chance.

This came in early this morning from USA Alerts

CDC confirms 15th US coronavirus case. Patient among group in quarantine at Lackland AFB, Texas. Likely to be add'l cases  in coming days.

So this is now on the rise in the USA.  But so far are the ones coming in I think are all from China.  But I also believe that now might be the time for us to prepare for what's ahead.  It's under control here now but will only take a few to start the pandemic.  I am taking inventory of what we have for a pandemic.  I have the cleaners, mask, googles,  gloves, and enough food and water to keep us going for a few months. But don't think it will be that long. We might not even get that bad here as long as they are keeping things under control. Not going out to buy anything as I think we are good with what we have. Though I am going out to pick up RX's tomorrow and today going to one store to buy peanut butter and fruit for the food ministry.  Harris Teeter has fruit on sale for 88 cents a can. Haven't seen that in a long time. Going to buy some for us as well. Just have to keep two sept. baskets as the  Church is tax exempt. So DH will be going with me to push one basket for us.

  2. This just in from USA alerts. USNORTHCOM implementing DOD Global Campaign plan for Pandemic influenza and infectious diseases for force protection and community based assistance. Checking e-mail now. E-mail to long to print here and don't know how to send it from e-mail to here. But the just of it is they are telling all marines coming in to US from China to start preparing for the pandemic. It also is stating for all families to prepare and I am thinking they are talking about military families. Also for the ships and installations.  Having finished reading all of it yet, but sounds like something in the wind. Will report on more when I finish reading it.

OK the DOD and military, seems mainly the marines are now taking all precautions as they now fear this can weaken our military forces if it becomes a pandemic form on the ships and installations of military bases around China and other countries. They are now preparing for containment if any of them get sick.

  3. After I bought y Emeril's power air fryer, it replaced 4 of my appliances. So that got rid of a lot of used space I needed. Even replaced the toaster. It toast, bakes, air fry, rotisserie, slow cooker, oven, dehydrator, and more.  So the 4 appliances that I got rid of saved me a lot of space. Still learning things on it though.

I have several cast iron pans and a set of stainless steel pans that I use all the time.  I use my corning ware and pyrex bowls as well as some other bowls I have that I use a lot. I also have been trying to get rid of all the plastic containers. Not good for microwave cooking.  I have several wooden spoons that I love and got my eye on a wooden dipper. Price has to come down first. The spatulas, spoons and forks for cooking with are all stainless steel. DH is a diehard when it comes to using stainless steel for cooking. Got rid of most all of the plastic spoons and spatulas.  DH bought a really good quality set of knives several years ago and that is all we use where the knives are concerned. Those still look new. Don't think I can scale down anymore than I already have.

Chinese gov. reports sharp rise in coronavirus cases in Hubel province. 14,840 new cases today and 242 deaths.  US equity futures in steep decline.  monitoring.  I should be getting more detail through e-mail shortly.

  5. Here is the recipe for no yeast bread.

Irish Soda Bread:  Makes one loaf.

2 1/2 unbleached all-purpose flour, plus more for the pan and top of the loaf

    3 tablespoons sugar

    1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

    1 teaspoon baking soda

    1 teaspoon fine sea salt

3 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into half-inch pieces

    1/2 cup dried currants (optional)

    1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons buttermilk as needed

Position a rack in center of the oven and preheat to 400* Dust the bottom of an 8-inch round cake pan with flour. (I use a loaf pan)

Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt together in large bowl.

Add the butter and stir to coat with the flour mixture.  Using a pastry blender or two knives, cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly, with some pea-size pieces of butter. stir in the currants and caraway seeds (if you decide to use them) Stir in enough of the buttermilk to make a moist soft dough.  Knead in the bowl just a few times to be sure the dough comes together.  This is not a smooth dough.

Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and shape into a ball, Sprinkle the top with at least 1 tablespoon flour to give the loaf a rustic look. Transfer to the prepared pan.  Using a sharp knife, cut a shallow 4 inch wide X in top of dough. The X will open during baking and help the loaf bake more evenly.

Bake until the top is deep golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom,  35 to 40 minutes.

Remove from the pan. Let cool on a wire cooling rack for 5 to 10 minutes, and serve warm.  The bread is best the day it is made.

This was the only recipe I could find in my stash of recipes that does not need yeast. Got this out of the VA Pilot newspaper back in 2014.

  6. I used to use the sour dough starters. Been thinking about starting one up again. haven't made any in a while other than corn bread and biscuits.  Thinking about starting to make it again but hubby eats to much of it and he can't do that with diabetics.  I also am a diabetic and have to watch it. We don't usually eat bread with meals and cornbread is only when we have fish. Biscuits with a good protein breakfast only.

I will check my recipes to see if I have any non yeast ones.  I think I do but can't remember for sure.

And yes you can store yeast in freezer. I have several jars of it in the big freezer.

  7. Dogmom4, that is a lot of great information there. Thank you for posting it.

Lisa Bedford from Survival Mom sent me an e-mail on some good cleaning products that can kill viruses and bacterial illnesses. She said it could kill  this virus on surfaces as well.  It is pricey, but seems to be worth it. It is called Oxivir TB in both wipes and spray. It has a one minute kill claim and uses a powered by accelerated hydrogen peroxide technology. I went ahead and bought some to try. Got both the spray and the wipes. Will put some wipes in a zip lock bag to carry to store to wipe down the cart. Not all the stores have the wipes and sometimes the ones that do are out.  She said you do have to be careful with it on wood surfaces. But for door knobs, sinks and such would be great. It is also food safe. So I can wipe down my counter tops with it as well. The article also states that if you are wanting to make your own disinfecting spray using hydrogen peroxide you would need 7.5 percent or higher.  Don't know where I could get that percentage of it. Maybe a medical supply.

Also Colloidal Silver has great antibacterial properties to kill MRSA and Staph but will not kill viruses or Coronavirus.

The kill claim for alcohol is 10 minutes which means it has to stay on the surface damp for 10 minutes before it will kill anything.

As for Lysol, which I use a lot for bacterial infections will not kill a virus type of infection.

Bleach is great if you can stand the smell and you must be careful with it.  DH has asthma so I cannot use bleach if he is around. He will get choked up and have to grab his inhaler. So I don't use it when he's home. I send him to market so I can bleach down the bathrooms sometimes. At least there he has people that will keep an eye on him and not let him fall.

This was on my local news last night...they said the confirmed case was accidentally released and brought back but supposedly was not around any public at any time.

That's why I like USA Alerts.  I get the info before it hits TV, even if they didn't want the info published. They are homeland security. So I get that info way before the public.

  9. WE2 Praying for your brother to get through this.  I know it can be very hard on family.

My sore throat and sinus drainage has turned out to be an ear infection that is draining down.  Taking antibiotic drops in the ear for it now. I should have known that was what was wrong as my ears where getting a bit sore.  We have hot water baseboard heat so with that we don't need the humidifier. But if we use the fireplace then we use it. As the fireplace can dry the air out.

Ann,  Storm looks really happy.  She he knows he has a good home that will take good care of him. So far we have no snow this winter.  But we have had our worst snows in March before. So hoping that won't happen this winter.

Took DH to get his ultra sound and then back to doctor for more lab work.  He is worn out.  Ultra sound took about an hour.  Haven''t desided if it's a girl or boy yet.:24:  Yes he had to go to the women's center for it. That is where they do all the test for both men and women. So why they call it the women's center is beyond me.

Haven't been home long.  Fixed DH  some lunch and got him settled and put more drops in ears. Just what I don't need. Going to take it easy today.

Still haven't been to Walmart yet.  Maybe will go next week. I am trying to slow down my store trips as it seems I am in one all the time when I am looking for cheap specials for the food ministry. And I am trying to use up some of the food I already have and not ready to replace anything yet.  Got the freezer in kitchen down a lot now. But the monster chest freezer in garage is still over flowing. Will go through that one and bring some meat into the freezer in kitchen and see what is out there I can get in the canner.

  10. Been raining off and on all day today. Weather was in 60's for a while and then started cooling down and damp. DH is not a happy camper this evening. He has to go have the ultra sound on liver and doc called and said liver counts are still up and wants more lab work. The lab work is what he's not happy with. Seems he has had labs every week for the past 3 or 4 weeks now. He will get over it. We need to find out what is going on.

This afternoon I did a bit of house work and decided to do some reading. Read Bible and also a book that I started called Wormwood. Interesting book, but not sure about it. Not really into space stuff.

Seems every evening is when my throat decides to get scratchy.  This to shall pass. Seems I am starting to get some of my energy back though. I think it is just sinus drainage.

  11. Miki, I also heard 21 days but don't know if that's been confirmed yet.

USA Alerts states that the state dept. authorizes voluntary departure of non emerg  USGOV employees  and families from US Consulate Hong Hong out of an abundance of caution due to the coronavirus.

  12. Puking doggie not good. Hope he's doing ok now.  Haven't been to Walmart in a while. Guess I should check ours out but going to be hard rain tomorrow, so staying home.

Think I am trying to come down with a head cold.  No energy for almost a week and now past 2 days off and on headache with a bit of stuffy feeling. Ears feel like they have pressure on them as well. Not good. Been trying to fight it off.  Going to try the elderberry tonight. I hate taken meds.

But things around here must go on.  So took car in for repairs this morning and got the rental car. No instructions. It's push button, she hid the keys where I found them inside the console covered up. When she picked us up to go back to enterprise, She speeds like she's on a mission to get back there. winding roads to boot as she took the back country roads.  But we got there in one piece and then I had to figure everything out when we got home.

Got all the clothes washed and played around on the computer for a bit, trying to get rid of all the junk e-mails that keep coming in. Started hitting unsubscribe but then I just get other e-mail to take it's place. So this time I just sent to junk mail. Thinking about opening up a new account and closing that one after I change the e-mail address with the ones I need to keep. Lots of trouble doing that though. Will  debate it. I have had that same e-mail address now for 14 years. Had it cleaned up a couple of times and here we go again.

Got the call from our CPA our taxes are done and they are mailing them to us to sign and send back. We always just mail the stuff to them and they do it all by mail. Beats going to VA Beach to take it to them. I hate that drive. Crazy people on those roads. The only reason we use them is because they are the only ones that know how to do a trust. The CPA in our area knows nothing about how to do one for taxes.

WE2, glad your DH was able to get things fixed. You will have a new house yet.

I found quite a few Alerts USA apps.  Which one are you using?  I have an Android phone.

I also have an Android phone.  I am using Alerts USA/ Homeland Security.  It cost $49.95 a year.  Right now it just told me that they are monitoring a response to possible active shooter situation, Dry Dock S. Norfolk Naval Shipyard.  That is not that far away from us. It then goes to your e-mail address to tell you more when they get the u-dates as well as by cell phone text.

    4. Regional

    5. U.S. Federal

Thanks for trying to help.  :hug3:

I pray it all works out for you.   Never heard of any of those banks around here.  Though I was hoping to be of some help.

Littlesister, only my Ex. Which is a shame because I was with him every step of the way for four years, except for 6 weeks of boot camp. Including a year in Japan and a year in China/Taiwan. Plenty have served but most didn't retire from military and, quite honestly, most have passed on.

There are 5 credit unions in that area:

    1. Teachers Union

    2. Be employed by... (I'm retired) or be a member of the cat society. Huh?

    3. Employed by corporate member group. (I'm retired) 1 star rating.

    4. "404 - file or directory not found". 1 star rating.

    5. Must live or work in a county that I won't be living in.

I just noticed none of them have military as a option.

Is there a Chartway bank there?  You might could talk with them to see if you could get in with them. They are a good bank. We got in with them and they are not that restrictive.  Might be worth a try if you  have one there.

  16. Been a slow day today.  fixed DH and Myself a big breakfast, Then just picked up around the house putting things away. Gave kitchen a good cleaning.  Then just rested.  Have felt like I was coming down with a head cold, but feeling better now. Might be why I have had no energy all week.  fixed some beef tips in the slow cooker for dinner and then spent part of the afternoon lessoning to Jan Markell with olive tree ministries.

Thanks for commiserating on my banking issues. After living in Ohio for so long, I didn't realize how few options on institutions/resources there are in Indiana. I chose a bank who could accommodate all of my needs in one place. Or so I thought. Not bashing Indiana. I'm a Hoosier through and through (there is a song in there somewhere) and so is all of my family, but come on Indy. Step it up.

I would sort of understand if I was trying to change things over the phone. But I didn't change anything. Certainly not my mailing address. For them to want me to change my address temporarily is insane. They have my correct address. They always have. It's the one they always have used.

Then to send me the same E-form twice where I have to subscribe for $4.16 per month to use is ...insane. Not paying for your SNAFU.

I'm really angry now because they didn't call me or email me back Friday or Saturday. If I have to make a trip over there, in the winter no less, to get my tax form it will be h3ll to pay. Film at 11:00.  (Does any one remember when the news casters used to say that? Big bank robbery in Indiana...Film at 11:00! Old woman goes berserk in bank lobby...Film at 11:00! Do they still even call them news casters? Maybe reporters. Was surprised when Shepherd Smith 'came out'. I like him. His voice soothes me. Would be nice to go over and see g-son again though. Haven't seen him since Christmas. Did I tell you Santa actually came to his house? Guess who has ADD? See how it works. No brain in my skull, just a squirrel peddling real fast in a wheel thinking she is going to Walmart. Walmart...I need to go get that Lysol I keep forgetting.)

I remember her saying something about my bank accounts and my mortgage account being different some how. Same bank, all info on one paper statement. Same on one e-statement. She said that didn't matter. Then she said something about "DBA". Doesn't that mean "doing business as"?  I have no business account. I'm about to pull my 'Senior Card ' on their a$$es.

I just remembered all the trouble I had getting my drivers license over there. Speaking of which, I could send them a picture of my Indiana drivers license with my INDIANA ADDRESS on it. Dang, I'm getting mad all over again.

I have seriously thought about pulling all of my accounts from there and keeping them here in Ohio. Most things are done electronically anyway. (yeah, I'm seeing how that can work) but what if the grid goes down. My brick and mortar bank is 5 minutes away and they know me in there.

I don't qualify for any Credit Unions. I'm not a teacher, firefighter, steel mill worker, Catholic, Hindu, Russian, Native American, student, one armed paper hanger or anything else. As soon as they open The Old Farts, I'm Not Doing Your Job For You And Not Hasseling You Credit Union, I'll be there. Early.

Do you have any family that is or has been in the military.  We are members because DH's brother was in the military. Though he had gotten out after 6 years, we didn't need any prove that he was in there. They just said ok and we got in. Can't say if it will work for you but worth a try if you have anyone like brother, father, sister etc that served.

  18. There is no universal consensus regarding where the virus originated.  It spread world wide in 1918-1919. In the US, it was first identified in military personal in spring of 1918. It is estimated that about 500 million people or one third of the world's population became infected. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States.

Dogmom. that is a better article than what I had.  It may not have started in Spain but it was unclear as to the exact country it started in.  But at least we know where this virus we are dealing with now is from.

    This in from Alerts USA

    Coronavirus  globally is 34,866 confirmed

China 34,598 with 3,401 new cases    6,101 severe cases with 1,280 new severe cases   723 deaths with 86 of those new.

Outside of China are 288 confirmed cases

24 countries with the virus and so far only 1 death.

    Risk Assessment

    China Very High Risk

    Regional level high risk

    Global high risk

Official COC case numbers for the US is as follows

    positive 12

    Neg. 225

pending 100.  I assume these are in quartine.

    States with confirmed cases

    Washington State

    CA

    Arizona

    Wisconsin

    Illinois  and

    Massachasetts

China continues to ignore repeated offers by centers for disease control and world health organizations to send teams of specialist to help both in their response as well as learn more about the nature of this virus.

  19. Jeepers, I hope you can find another bank that can help you move everything there. from that bank. We are with BB&T and looking to change banks. Had several run in's with them. They got the idea when we stayed and wouldn't let them close up till they put our deposit back in our account that we had to show prove of before they would remove it from someone else's account.  They put it back once and the guy called and said it was his money. Never had to show proof or nothing, just a phone call.  That second time was the last straw. They now know when I speak they best be getting things straight.  Kept them open for another 30 minutes or so till they put a freeze on the other guy's account and they learning a lesion that when someone shows proof of a deposit not to take the word of someone that just calls and says it is their money.

  20. I would think that China is already in pandemic mode. They are the worst country.  I heard Japan is on the rise. Not sure of other countries yet. But for a full blown pandemic, I think it would have to get at least almost as bad as China in all countries. I am going back to read up on that Spanish flu  of 1918 that killed so many. That was a pandemic. Maybe can learn something from it.  That started in Spain if I remember correctly during WW1.

  21. I don't see a end to this in the near future.  It's not over till its over. With flu season at it's highest state and this virus. It will make it hard to know who is in a store with just a cold, flu or may have that virus.

And yes this virus can effect you by way of the eyes. I think I mentioned it earlier on one of the sites. some form of tight fitting glasses or goggles would help. But be sure when you remove them to clean them good. The mask need to fit tight around the mouth and nose. NO GAPS.

I am going to join you all behind the :behindsofa:  :yuk:  Run, don't walk to get to that :behindsofa:
