YYY
Hi Everybody, Tonight on ABC News, there was a report that the dog food situation may get worse. For this reason, I’d like to can some dog food. Does anyone here know how? If so, please tell us how to do it. Thanks YYY Link to comment
Snowmom
YYY, I don't know how to can it yet, but I may look into doing that too. Here are a few sites with recipes for making dog food. I haven't really looked through them but wanted to put a few in here. If you do a google search, you will come up with so many sites. I'll have to check some of the recipes and see if they are to be canned. Some are for treats, and others for food. http://www.cooksrecipes.com/category/pet-recipes.html http://www.i-love-dogs.com/dog-food-recipes.html http://www.seefido.com/html/dog_food_recipes.htm http://www.globalpaw.com/dogtreats/?gclid=...CFRQkUAodDXjHAA Link to comment
westbrook
make a meat stew, be sure to include pumpkin. You may want to look at the B.A.R.F diet. This stands for two things.. Bones And Raw Food or Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods. This will give you guidelines as to what is needed to create a well balanced diet for your dog. this will take some research on your part so you can make informed choices about what your dogs needs may be. I feed a combination of Raw and dry food. I would have no problem canning a meat stew. Link to comment
Snowmom
There would be different types of food for different types of dogs then, is that what you are saying, Wes. I guess that would make sense. A little dog wouldn't need the same things the big dogs might. Link to comment
Snowmom
I just found this, I don't know if it is anything we can use, but thought I would add it here anyway. http://dels.nas.edu/dels/rpt_briefs/dog_nutrition_final.pdf Link to comment
westbrook
a puppy needs more of some things then say a senior dog will need. My dogs can eat anything.. from a large goat head to goat legs, but a tiny chi dog would have a hard time with a goat tail and perheps even a chicken wing. there is much to take into consideration when raising dogs on homemade dog food... I wonder if we ever got those threads back where we talked about homemade recipes. I raise rabbits for the dogs as well as myself. I feed the dogs all the entrails and organs from the goats and chickens. this gives my dogs vegetables In a y2k environment, I would cook the bones down to mush in my pressure cooker and add wheat and canned pumpkin and any left overs I had, mixed together and fed to the dogs. now I am gonna read the link. westbrook
good article on nutrition! I keep vitamins for the dogs, they are or can be expensive and the dogs don't like them no matter how yummy the bottle says they are! NEVER feed cooked bones to dogs!!! this means you cook up chicken and hand the dogs a cooked chicken bone, pork chop bone or beef bone. Cooked bones may splinter and this isn't good. Raw bones are ok. This includes chicken bones. If concerned, give the dogs neck bones or wings. I often times feed turkey necks to the dogs. Link to comment
dogmom4
Abby was completely raw fed when was bred. I am certain that is why she carried 11 pups so easily, had no problems giving birth and was able to feed them herself without any issues. It practically broke the bank because was one hungry dog when she was nursing her pups! I have put whole chickens outside and just let her have at it. Keeps her busy. And it might take the whole day for her to finish it....but, then she wouldn't eat for a day or 2 after that. Link to comment
