My thyroid is driving me nuts

Doctors are door knobs, they turn one way, "Open to Your Wallet"> closed to your needs,,,,, LOL. INHO

Im disabled, and I really do know more about my condition than my specialist does,,,,,,,,

American Doctors work backwards, ruling this out ruling THAT out, ( when LIKELY they already know or suspect a condition) to get money, help the labs & hospitals make money, Medicine is all about money ( with RARE exception)....IMHO

If you have to get a PDR, (Physicians Desk Reference) , Last Years is FINE< get one, read Up, use a dictionary on all the big words, become well acquainted with the jargon. Read articles on YOUR condition, stories of people with it, these are On-Line, get some insights. Arm yourself...

Research, find FACTS, back up the fact with medical Journals, ( on line). Find all alternatives, research them, become an INFORMED Consumer, then tell the Doctor YOUR in charge, He /she Diagnoses, but ASKS to prescribe.......and informs YOU of all the parameters.

that's what I do

I m well informed, I know the latest research, last drugs, trials etc etc.. I learned how to talk to the Lab personal, X ray people, the Doctors, Nurses, therapist. Heck they ask me about the latest things in Medicine, (my area anyway).....

After your familiar with Jargon, words, Drug names, Diagnoses, Lab tests and reason(s) for them, ask the lab teks, they’ll generally talk to an informed person, but will tell “white Lies” to a jittery person...so be informed, be comfortable in talking in YOUR arena ( it’s YOUR life, friend) .

Ask a pharmacist ( more that 1, now) for his/Her insights, drug alternatives, side effects, handling any side effects. A Pharmacist knows FAR more about drugs that the Doctors do!

Then Tell the Doctor what You want. I DO NOT let a Doctor run my life....... They wanted to Put me in a Nursing Home a long time ago, 23 years ago, Im still kicking! ! ! ! You can too.

Kitty,

While researching on your condition, I find several striking things, It is much like CFS Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, it is an auto immune disorder, has symptoms much like depression, what little information is READILY available is ambiguous -at best. Many of the web-sights offer which foods to AVOID, and SOME foods to be eaten, without much of an explanation for these !

I see to that things like Iodine, calcium and magnesium, vitamin A, B, zinc, tyrosine amino acid, and essential fatty acid are listed as “PLUSES”, and so JUICING comes to mind **. Interestingly, some article also mention “Concentrated juice of barley is also best nutrition for hypothyroidism.” Leaving me to wonder id sprouting Barely might also help, ( something I do for taste, a compliment to my baking & cooking, I both sprout & malt my barley).

The enzyme “amylase” present in Wheat, Rye, Barley, ( & some Bean) sprouts helps the body to better extract & burn the energy in the food for energy, in a way OTHER than the body alone. Normally, the Body uses its own energy to process the food, in order to produce energy, Amylase, and some other enzymes are good at extracting the foods energy in digestion, thus we have a little more energy. Vegetarians/Vegans, Health Huts, Body Builders, eat sprouts for this purpose.

I found, in my own research, the several studies in Europe, on RYE concerning Nutrition Energy, Health/ Immune Enhancement, to be beneficial. RYE was once the MAIN grain/bread of Northern Europe Countries, ( before it became the main stay in the Beer & Malt Liquor industries). On the recommendations in the findings of these “studies”, I undertook to increase my intake of RYE and other whole grains, to my Great benifit..

As a diabetic, with secondary & turshiary conditions with complications , and door-Knob Physicians telling me to “Get used to being Disabled, consider entry to a Nursing Home”, I looked for and found solutions, alternative ways to survive, cope and handle my life. Whole grains, which I sprout & eat or grind into cereal/flour, also sprout Broccoli ( not good for you), alfalfa, ( should be OK for you), Beans, radish seeds, ect. Nutrition, Good eating, is one key for us, to be sure, Exercise, Herbs, Entertainment, Laughter, friendship, fellowship, Prayer/medation all help.

Seafood in on the List of GOOD foods for you, (Iodine is present in Sea Food), kelp is THE source for our Iodine In America ! The Concentrated barley Juice, ( a Green Powder- made from Spouted Barley & its MALT ) is a bit expensive, You might look into sprouting & matling you own barley, or using Malt barley syrup, If you bake, purchase Malted Barly Flour/ Dough enhancer ....

Something to think about anyway!

** I make my own Juices with a "Juiceman" ( pulp Extraction method) and find it to give me energy. . . . The VITAMIX ( Whole Food juicing, Pulp remains in the Juice) is a high price unit, but can be well worth the cost...

Kitty,

I hear you as I have in the past been on Synthroid with no relief for my thyroid symptoms.

Diet has been my only hope! I have found that the lo-carb way of life has not only brought me back renewed energy but it is the only way I can shed pounds. Whenever I start eating out of plan,(eating sugar and flour) the energy subsides greatly and the weight creeps back on. I am not recommending that everything I have done will work for you but changing one's diet certainly can help. I have truly found that "You are what you eat" smile There is a wealth of information on this website really helps me stay on track: http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=76

I too am hypothyroid and have put on weight, have low energy, etc. Meds have never helped that, and I doubt ever will.

I pretty much have no thyroid function which really bothers me post-TEOTWAWKI. What will I do?

BUT... in the meantime, I am learning about how diet can help.

I really need to dig in, I just have so much on my plate its hard to manage all of these things, but if I'm not healthier I cannot do all that needs to be done, so I've upped myself on the list of priorities.

Here are two favorite books: Nourishing Traditions and books by Dr. Schwartzbein. Also, Yahoo has groups that you can join to learn more.

I need to compile a list of things I should be eating, like Omega-3, coconut oil, etc. Have not done it yet, but I need to.

remember, you are the final authority regarding your body! YOU not a DR. which by the way has a license to...

"practice medicine"!!!

Research, know your stuff inside and out! Tell him what you want to do, why you want to do it and stick to your guns!

don't let them talk you out of it.. make you feel stupid or inferior.

"this isn't working, I want to try something else. I have done my research and want to try XXXXXXXXX. If it doesn't give me any relief (replace relief with what it is you are wanting to happen) then I can always go back to XXXX.

Say it with conviction! look at them in the eye! be stead fast and don't be wimpy.

It is YOUR body!

I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis...I too have gone round and round with the Docs. The meds don't work as well as I think they should, but it's sure a lot worse without them (at least I've stopped walking into rooms and freezing, wondering why in the world I'm in there and other such fun memory problems). What's also helped me is researching the problem from "acceptable" medical sources and printing them, give them to your Doc to back yourself up. I also try to eat well. Exercise has done a LOT towards the weight issue and the blues. Good luck to you, I know how frustrating and helpless you feel.

STOP!!!!!!!!!! Most doctors don't have the answer, go to www.alsearsmd.com/content/

Last year I had to take my wife to a doctor because she was really draging, with real bad headaches and no energy. She was told that she had hypothyroid, her cholesterol was up, and her blood pressure was up. The first thing he perscribed was Statin drugs, and after a month, guess what, she was none the better. That is when we got on the internet and started doing our own research. We found out that there is a big push by the drug companies to declare that most people have cholesterol problems and trying to get as many people as they can on Statin drugs, these drugs can kill you, its all about money. Also found out that they are bribbing the doctors with money under the table to get more people on Statin drugs. In fact, Dr Sears stated that there is no drug that can help your thyroid, only destroy it, and you. But there is a world of natural remedies that work with the body and won't kill you trying to heal you. Dr. Sears has a whole layout on how to take care of your Thyroid problems. He is one of the best I have found where it comes to natural healing.

Oh yea, we found out later that my wife did not have high blood pressure, her cholesterol was not up, it was all rigged to sale drugs that don't work.

I don't know if this is of any help to you or not.

4 months ago I had my thyroid level checked because I was having a lot of trouble losing weight. My thyroid level was 1.4 on a scale of .4 to 4.5 My doctor said that 1.4 was normal, even though I mentioned that everything I had read on the internet said the thyroid level should be 2.0 - 2.5

I decided to take a thyroid "supplement" on my own (I know, "self medicating" is not a good idea) to get my level up.

I could not get a script for Armour, however, doing some searching I found a product that appeared to be the exact same thing as Armour. I have been taking 1/2 tab morning and night for 3 1/2 months. My thyroid level (as of last week) was 2.3 !!

I have had one or two people here state that it would not have any effect because it was not the same as Armour. I don't know if they are right or wrong.

What I DO KNOW IS: 1. It works for me. 2. As far as I am able to tell, it is the exact same thing as Armour. 3. It is available WITHOUT a prescription because it is sold as a supplement.
